A New Meme

Bernie of BurntOfferings has tapped me for a meme, and it's a good one. The idea is to learn more about someone from their writings, and to that end, the meme-er is to choose prior posts that illustrate the various subjects of the meme.

1. Family..... I have chosen this post to illustrate it. My three children and now my nine grandchildren are the loves of my life.

2. Friends..... and this is the best post I can find. My friend Lib has been gone a long, long time, and there is hardly a week goes by that I don't think of her.

3. Yourself..... You may be sick of reading about me, but I never tire of it...LOL! Maybe this one will be better.

4. Something I love is the next one. This one should be named someone I love, or a day I loved. It is about my wedding day.

5. Anything will do for this section. I chose a post I wrote on my parakeets, who are long gone and still missed.

Thanks, Bernie, for selecting me for this meme. I hope this helps you learn more about my life. Now, for choosing people to do this meme: I hesitate to name anyone, since I have named many for several other memes this year. How about this: if you like this idea, do it and please let me know when you post your choices. It should make for good reading!

Quotes of Note ~ and a Guest

Guess who came for breakfast recently? The pickings were slim around here. Nothing is growing because we have had so little rain this summer, and even the leaves of the violets have been eaten by the deer that roam so freely in our woods.

This Tickles My Fancy!

I clicked onto Kay's site (Kay's Thinking Cap) Friday and found that I have been given this award for Creative Bloggers. Since I make my living with creativity, it means a lot, Kay. Thanks for tapping me!

All of you whom I have nominated, go here and pick up your award. And don't forget to nominate five of your favorite creative bloggers for the award!

Here is my list of awardees:

Naomi, of Here in the Hills, is creative in every aspect of her life - and it definitely shows in her blog. She writes music and lyrics, acts, paints, has wonderful photos of her garden and the wildlife found there. I cannot imagine that you haven't visited Naomi yet, but if you haven't - GO! You'll thank me later.

Shephard, of Shubert Alley Shephard is a writer and one of the best home decorators I've seen. His photos of his home, his cats and his travels are marvelous and you will be amazed at the eclectic and entertaining posts he comes up with.

Badaunt, of Present Simple, is a New Zealander teaching English in Japan. Many of her posts recount her experiences in school, but on days when she posts animal and bird photos, accompanied by her stories and dialog, she is a very creative treat! Here's an example!

Anna, of Anna's Photo of the Day, takes the most amazing photos wherever she happens to be. She also writes creative captions and commentary about them. I know she is travelling now, so she might not be able to respond to this award quickly (but that's not a problem)! You will benefit from a daily dose of Anna - so go!

Di Overton, of Designer's Block, has daily photo posts of home furnishings from all over the world. Need ideas? Here's your spot. Need the perfect gift for newlyweds? Check here first! She even has her own line of products, called Ghost Furniture. Scroll back through the pages to see it. I don't expect Di to see this or to nominate others.....I just thought you ought to see one of the most creative on the web.

I hope you will enjoy discovering the many creative talents of my choices! Again, thanks to Kay for my nomination!

Politically Correct?

Mr. kenju didn't attend his college reunion this year, since we were going to the beach for a week around the same time. We found out later that Nancy Pelosi spoke to the group one evening, and the brooch below is what she gave everyone. I wonder what all the Republicans did with theirs? One of them gave me his pin. Now tell me please, where would you suggest I wear this? (I have an idea where to put it...LOL.)

The guy who gave me the pin is a classmate of mr. kenju's who lives south of here. He was here overnight because mr. kenju had invited him to attend a lecture that he had planned at his church, given by a priest who is a well-known authority on astronomy. I have heard him speak, and he is funny and very interesting.

Have you ever known any jocks or former jocks? They are used to people following them around and "brown-nosing" to the maxx. This guy fits that description better than almost anyone I've ever seen. Mr. kenju was a jock, and the guy who was here last night is bound to have jock itch of the nose - even after all these years he still fawns all over him. During a conversation we had this morning, he mentioned that mr. kenju was an "Adonis" during school (and had girls chasing him all over the campus). After the guy left to go back home, I found mr. kenju on the computer, googling Adonis......ROFLMAO!

Somehow, I think they need to mention Americans!

What's in Your Kitchen?

Here are my dustcatchers. What do yours look like?

I want you to know I didn't buy any of these old tins. Every one of them resided in my mother's kitchen cabinets, and when she died and I cleaned out her house, I couldn't bear to part with something already so old!

I have probably shown you some of this stuff on Just Ask Judy. I can't remember. I started collecting carved wooden figures about 25 years ago. These make me smile. The bottle of Glyco-Thymoline is one I gave my mother back in the 70's. If you can find it (usually in health-food stores, or wherever they sell new-age remedies) it is the very best thing for mucous and post-nasal drip. Gargle with this stuff and you'll be amazed at what it can do. It's good for sunburn and a whole host of other things, too.

This old lady's eyes appear to be following you around the room. It sort of freaks me out, so she sits high on a shelf so I don't notice it so much.

After procrastinating for 10-12 years, I have decided that come January, I am removing that ugly old wallpaper, come hell or high water. Want to come and help?

My Bread Box

In honor of Bread Box the blogger, I am showing you my antique bread box. I was told when I bought it that it dates to around the turn of the last century, but there is no date on it anywhere that I can see. The top photo is of the top of the box. Click to enlarge and read the caption. The design work is quite nice too. I had to take it out on the deck to get good pics of it.

This is the front.

This is the side.

This is the inside of the open front. I love the "snow job" written by some early ad exec. Apparently, the coconut they refer to was soap.

I have never kept bread in it because it is quite rusty and I have never been able to clean it sufficiently. I was always afraid if I used too much elbow grease on it, I'd scrub off the print and pictures. It sits on the table beside my bed, and holds tissues, hand lotion, mints, bookmarks, pen and paper. It looks much neater in this than in the basket I used to keep it in!

What to Do?

This is the way my hand looked on June 15th. You may recall that I wrote about banging it into a door frame. You can read about it here, if you like. See how the discoloration spread down into my fingers? It also crept up my hand and over my wrist before it began to fade. (Geeesh, I need some lotion, don't I?)

The point of this post is not the hand, however, it is my nails. I need some advice. About a week before this photo, I had gel nails applied over mine, which are puny and thin and break easily and have always done so. I thought they looked pretty good and I liked them until about 10 days ago, when they had grown so long that I could no longer use my cell phone or my land line without using a pencil eraser to press the numbers. They were seriously too long and getting more and more annoying by the moment. I tried to trim them, but that was a disaster, resulting in jagged breakage. So, I went to my salon and had them removed. After that process, they were sore and tender and thinner than ever. Since then, they have broken even more and split up into the nail bed.

What would you do? I am not sure I want more gel applied to them if this is what happens when they come off. What about acrylic nails? Do you have any experience with them? (No, not you, Hoss.)

I have heard that acrylic nails are easier to remove than gels. Do you know if that is true? The only reason I am making a big deal out of this now is that I am going to a school reunion in a week or so, and I hate to go looking like I have been biting my nails all my life. What would you do?
Finally, can you believe it is August already??!!
