A Ten Hour Day.....

gets looonng! But there were respites and bright spots and some humor - so it was all worth it. I left the house yesterday at 9:15 am and got back home at 9:30 last night. But to be honest, there was at least one hour spent in the car (I drove just over 100 miles) and an hour for dinner and an hour killing time in the choir room of a local church, so we could tear down the decor after the wedding.

The first wedding was at Washington-Duke Inn, a gorgeous place and the setting, outdoors on a terrace over-looking the golf course, was beautiful. The second wedding was at Raleigh Country Club, and the setting was almost identical to the first - but on a putting-green type lawn adjacent to the golf course.

The third wedding was a bit unusual. Mel had been asked to place a chuppah in a Catholic Church! A Jewish man was marrying a Catholic woman, and the ceremony was to be officiated by a Rabbi as well as a Priest. We have done inter-faith weddings before, but they are most often held in hotels, clubs or event sites. We got to the church during 5:30 Mass, so we had to wait to set-up. Then, when we found out the ceremony would only take about 30 minutes, Mel decided to wait and take down the Chuppah so he wouldn't have to go back later. We cooled our heels in the choir room and heard some beautiful music during the wedding.

The humor happened at late-lunch/early-dinner. Mel took us to the Golden Corral.  As we went through the line to pay, the cashier was flirting with our helper, a nice young man, who I will call Bill.  A bit later, when he left the table to get more food, she came up to Mel and asked if Bill was Mel's son. Mel replied no, that he was just working with us. She said she was very interested in him. A few minutes later, when I went back to the buffet, she talked to me about him and said she was really interested. Then she gave Bill a piece of paper with her phone number and told him he could call or text, and that she was getting off work right then. Bill was obviously a bit embarrassed, and said (to us) "It's never this easy."

She hung around for a while and finally left - or so we thought. As we excited the restaurant, there she was, sitting on a bench with a few other people. When she saw us leave without saying anything to her, she went to her car. We teased Bill for a while, and when we were at the church, taking about her, I said..."Mel, you'll notice that he hasn't thrown her phone number away....lol....he only wants us to think he isn't interested, and he'll call her later." At that point, he dropped it in the nearest trash can (which was actually a recycle can for drink cans).

That girl was not bad-looking at all, so I can't imagine she had that hard a time finding dates. Why she thought it was necessary to come on to him that way is a puzzle. She turned him off with her bold flirting. Take a lesson, girls, most guys don't like it when you are the pursuer - especially if you do it as strongly as this girl did.

My First Visit to Wegman's.....

I hope will not be my last. On Monday night, as my daughter and I were finishing our trip from WV to the DC area, we went to Wegman's, after she discovered I had never been to one. My Lord, what a place!! The only grocery that I've been to that even came close was Giant Open Air Market in Norfolk (45 years ago), where you could walk in at any time of the day or night (364 days per year), go to the meat department, choose your steak, take it to the restaurant and they would cook it to your specs and charge only the price of the steak. You could add a baked potato and a salad for about $1.50.

We walked around Wegman's a bit to get the stiffness out of my joints (six + hours in the car with few stops) and settled in the seafood area, where we both ordered pan-seared tilapia; mine with with lemon butter and broccoli and hers served over field greens. It was excellent, quick and inexpensive (only $10 per plate). Contrast that with my breakfast the next morning in the hotel:  $9.25 for eggs and bacon, and lunch: a turkey and havarti sandwich with chips and a soda - $11 something. I think if I lived near a Wegman's, I'd eat there at least three times a week - and I don't even like grocery shopping! NOTE to Wegman's owners:  you should consider moving into North Carolina (specifically Raleigh), to compete with Fresh Market and Whole Foods. I think you'd win, hands down!!

Last night, we went to the Sweetwater Tavern in Falls Church. The waiter said the magic words for me during his recitation of the night's specials:  mahi-mahi. I have loved it ever since I went to Hawaii in 1982. It was served with cauliflower mash, which was sweet and smooth, and two of the biggest asparagus spears I've ever seen (they were very tender to be so large, and very fresh.) I remembered to take a photo of my plate, but I can't show it to you until I get back home. Eating there was a pleasure, so if you ever come close to them (they have 3 places in this area) treat yourself. They also brew their own beer on the premises, but I didn't have any. Daughter ate the "small" portion of prime rib, which was large enough for two, if you ask me. She ate every bite of that, the mashed potatoes, and the Caesar salad.

Despite the initial reason for this trip (the funeral), it has turned out to be delightful in every way, and of course, spending alone time with any of my children is wonderful. We will get home tonight; wish us luck, as there are more storms forecast for the areas we have to drive through.

The Male of the Species

I saw this guy this morning. He was looking all around and trying to scratch some seed out of the cracks in the deck. I felt sorry for him, so I placed a plateful of seed on the deck bridge and.......

the little bugger wouldn't share with his mate. He made her wait until he had his fill before she  was allowed to approach. It's a darn good thing mr. kenju isn't like that!!

 *******

A dear friend took us out to dinner tonight, to The 42nd Street Oyster Bar. It is practically an institution here in Raleigh, and when the waiter asked if we had eaten there before, mr. kenju answered...."Yes, and probably before you were born." Naturally, I forgot to photograph my meal. Perhaps the excellent Bloody Mary had something to do with that....lol. I ate a crisp salad, mahi mahi, a cheese-topped mashed potato and my weight in the best hush puppies around. Then to add insult to injury (to my stomach) we shared a pecan pie/tart, which was brought to the table hot! What an experience!

On the way home, the "check engine" light came on in my car. Mr. kenju was afraid we would not make it home, but we did. I'll have to have that checked out tomorrow. Drat....it's always something. I sure hope this is nothing serious - since I just had a water pump installed this week.

A Lazy Kind of Day

Rainy days, especially cool ones, make me want to stay in bed. And since I had the mother of all headaches yesterday, that's what I did. Tyl*n*l and hot tea did nothing for it, so the only thing to do was crawl back under the covers.

Unfortunately, I couldn't turn off the cell phone, in case there was an important call. I had quite a few, and none of them was very important. But I never turn it off unless I'm in church or a movie, so I got interrupted nearly every time I drifted off to sleep. I fought the urge to throw the phone across the room every time...lol. I finally rallied around 4 pm (just about the time it quit raining and the sun came out), took a shower and dressed, which made me feel better at long last.

Around here, Sunday night is not a good time to plan a dinner out with friends. We discussed three different restaurants; two of them turned out to be closed on Sundays and the other one (fancy French foods with lots of butter) makes me sick every time I go there - so we have opted for Bonefish Grill. Next time we make plans to eat out, it will not be for Sunday night. This dinner is a belated celebration for my birthday, as well as the other woman, whose birthday is three days ahead of mine. Nothing like celebrating your birthday for weeks and weeks, is there?  I recommend it.

Birthday Brunch at Brio

Eggs Oscar has asparagus under poached eggs with Hollandaise sauce, and this one has spinach and artichokes as well as bacon and red peppers.  I heartily recommend it!  Brio also has the best Italian 'French' toast I've ever eaten, with mascarpone cheese and three kids of berries. You should try it!

***
Thanks to everyone for the many nice messages yesterday concerning my birthday. Between the blog and Facebook, to say I was overwhelmed is an understatement! So many lovely people saying such nice things about me! I'm trying to be humble about it.....lol. As you see above, I was taken to Brio by my younger daughter. It is currently my favorite place to have lunch. Afterward we went back to her home to watch her giant TV, but it wasn't long before her dad and I fell asleep. All it takes is a full stomach and a recliner - and some times the full stomach isn't necessary!

Our city doesn't specify which night to trick-or-treat; consequently we could have children coming two nights in a row. I really wish they would pick a night and stick with it. As a child in my hometown, trick-or-treat was always on the 30th.  I lucked out since it was my birthday, and of course I told everyone I came in contact with - and usually got an extra handful of candy for my efforts.  For the past two years, we've been invited to a Halloween party, and have not given out treats at home. This year I opted not to participate; not because I'm stingy, but because a certain mr. kenju cannot control himself when candy is in the house. I was sure to be left with extras and I didn't want to have to fight the urge to eat it myself or to fight with him about his urges. So, we are sitting in the dark, with the porch light out, hoping that no one rings the bell. Bah humbug!

All in all, it was a nice, calm, quiet birthday - just the kind I like. We ordered Chinese food for dinner and it was very good this time. The only place we can order to have food delivered is not always consistent with quality or taste, so we were pleasantly surprised. It was a good ending to a pleasant day, and that's all you can ask for, right?

            Happy Halloween!

More Halloween decor - although I have no idea how monkeys fit into it....lol....Once again, Blogger only allowed me to upload one photo. That will make it hard for me to show you the pix from our trip to the History Museum, since I took about 40 photos of the furniture exhibit. Oh, well....

We went out to dinner with friends tonight, to a new (to us) Mexican place; one with a California bent. I had a shrimp chimichanga, which was delicious. Served with mashed pintos, rice and pico de gallo, it had just the right amount of flavor and spice - and I enjoyed it very much. I took a photo, but I haven't uploaded it yet. The name of the restaurant is
Cafe Capistrano, and I recommend you try it - but go early. By the time we left, it was standing room only.

And now an announcement:  my blog friend Jean Mac of A Mountain Too High sent an email today asking that I let everyone know that she is alive and well - but apparently her computer isn't. She will be back soon, she says, and that is good news for those of us who follow her poignant story of life with Alzheimer's. Hurry back, Jean Mac!!

Sales, Chimichangas, Taxes and Gift Cards

When the lady came Saturday to see my "wares", she and her husband bought 13 buckets, 3 bolts ribbon, 44 vases of varying sizes, 36 votive candle holders, 10 silver cones for pews, 1 plaster pedestal, 17 plant baskets  -  and my garage is still  full of stuff. You wouldn't believe it even if I showed you a photo!

September 25th can't come too soon for me (the day of the garage sale!!) and then I'll be free at last....thank God Almighty...I'll be free at last. Maybe.

///*\\\

Chimichangas were calling my name on Saturday night, so we went to Los Tres Vaqueros - my favorite Mexican restaurant ever! After giving the order, we waited and waited, which is unusual for this place. Finally our meals came, and they were better than ever! If time is what it takes  to make it taste good- I'll be happy to wait! Chicken chimichangas with no sour cream, no guacamole and only a little lettuce, but extra cheese and re-fried beans......Heaven in my mouth!!

\\\*///

Do you know how much work you can get done when you are avoiding working on your taxes? I do. I washed windows, dusted my office, re-arranged my computer monitors and keyboards, did laundry, made beds, priced items for the garage sale, talked to a friend, lent my daughter my vacuum (and then she went out and bought one), cleaned out the pool skimmer, looked for deer (didn't see them today), watered plants and spent in inordinate amount of time on the computer (as usual). Taxes?  Nah...they can wait, can't they?  (I did them Sunday.)

///*\\\

Have you shopped at K-Mart lately?  I buy all our medicines there and with every transaction, they give you a coupon for a $10 gift card with a new or transferred script.  I used to think it was only good for a new medication - but I found out it  can be used for renewals also. So today I picked up two scripts for mr. kenju , some coffee and a loaf of bread (free with coupon) and got two $10 gift cards and along with it fourteen separate pieces of paper! It beats all I have ever seen. Their paper costs must be phenomenal per year because they generate huge numbers of coupons and receipts and papers documenting your meds and more papers telling you about the side-effects of said meds. It boggles my mind. And if they didn't give me a gift card with every one, I might buy from another store if I found out they don't generate such large amounts of paper.

The Dovecote at Fearrington

As usual, the photos went on the blog in reverse order. I know, I know -  it's user error. All the things you see here are available at the charming shop I told you about yesterday. You can see their web-site if you go back one post and follow the links. I call the one above "A bucket of Love."
They have amusing signs, soft and cuddly stuffed animals, a whole wall of spa products, each one more luxurious than the next.

Cute moss dogs with bandannas and purses galore. Do you prefer green or orange? If that's not your bag, they have black, white, coral, yellow ocher and everything inbetween!
Small trays with pithy sayings....brain coral from the sea,
T-shirts to advertise your whereabouts or where-I've been's...in every color imaginable. The banded cows are called belted Galloways. They are the symbol for Fearrington Village, chosen by the people who started the village many years ago. And one last photo from the luncheon...see the "gathering" on the wall? It's an ingenious use of farm and garden implements, all painted the same color. I want to make a similar one for my pool pump house, and paint it the same color as the pool water!

Wold you believe I still have photos to show you? Tomorrow, or in a few days, I'll show you the rest of them.
I'm working this weekend; helping to do and deliver floral arrangements and decor for the Jim Valvano Cancer Research Gala Events. Posting, visiting and commenting will have to take a back seat to work, but I'll return!

Get It While It's Hot!

You might have noticed I haven't posted anything but puns and jokes for the last two or three days. It's been hotter than Hell in August and it has washed any energy I might have had right out of me. While I'm not an authority on the temperature of Hell, I think I can speak to it - after two straight weeks of high nineties and dew points to match.

We went out to dinner on Saturday night. There is a newish Italian restaurant in Wake Forest called Il Bacio, (the kiss), and we were invited to try it with our friends, who have been there often and think it is great. The chef and his family are from Sicily, so the food is authentic. I had calamari for my appetizer, and the portion was enough for 2 or 3 people. Since mr. kenju wouldn't eat squid if it were the very last food available on earth, I ate the whole thing (or most of it) by myself. I then proceeded to eat a plate of lobster ravioli (photo above) and part of a beautiful salad. It was prudent of me to forgo dessert and stick with coffee, since I was so stuffed I could hardly draw breath.

We got there at 6:10 pm and we didn't leave until after 8:30, proving that our friends were very interesting ! They are good conversationalists, and like hundreds (nay thousands) around here, they are transplanted New Yorkers, who are happy to be out of the traffic and troubles that abound in that part of the world. They also knew half of the people dining there that night, and people kept stopping by our table to say hello.

***

On Sunday, the neighborhood had our annual picnic. In the past, it has been held in both May and September, and I am going to lobby for going back to spring or fall, instead of high summer. We had tents, and we didn't start until 5:30 pm, but it was still too hot and humid to be out for long. The food was good though!! Hot dogs and fried chicken and all manner of conceivable accompaniments were available. It was another night of stuffing our faces. It would behoove us to fast for the next three days, or at least consume much less quantity than we have recently. If only I could convince mr. kenju of the beauty of that.

I have a decade reunion for my high school coming up in August, and I had wanted to trim down a bit before that. No such luck. I guess I'll move that goal out to 2013, when our next class reunion is. Trouble is, there is about as much chance of it happening then as it is now.

***

My neighbor called today saying that her computer was driving her so crazy she was about to toss it out the window, and asked "Are you good with computers?" I answered that I would try, so I went over to see her. Her computer is a Mac, and I had to tell her I wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot-pole. The only other time I tried to check my email on someone's Mac, I couldn't make head nor tails of it. I know that those of you who are Mac lovers will tell me I'm all wrong, but don't preach to this choir. I'd need lessons for years!

My computer isn't exactly a shining star at present, and I am about to seek semi-professional help - (so Tullie - get ready!) It keeps telling me that it needs more memory, so I keep doing what little I know to do to achieve that, and it isn't helping. GAH!

Sitti

Sitti (pronounced sit'-tee) means grandmother in Lebanese. My dearest old friend is of Lebanese extraction and when I saw a new restaurant in Raleigh with that name, I knew we had to go there when she came to visit. I had (typically) forgotten about it, but her grandson, pictured here with my friend and his significant other, ran it up the flag pole - and we saluted!

We met downtown on the first day of spring, which was doing its best to impress. Temperatures hovered around 75*, with sunny, blue skies and warm breezes. Downtown Raleigh used to be deserted on Saturdays, but since an urban renewal began over the last 2-3 years, people are flocking to the downtown area once again. The large windows at Sitti allow lots of people watching; both passers-by and diners who choose to sit outside. We wanted to catch up on each other's lives, and the restaurant allowed us to do that easily. Though there were plenty of people there, the acoustics were almost perfect.

Beginning with hummus and Baba Ganoush, on warm, puffy pita bread, I chose a Lebanese style hamburger, made with onions and mint (yes, mint!) mixed inside, and served on a bakery roll with excellent fries. Trust me; the next hamburgers I make at home will definitely have mint included!

As a teenager, I was treated with some frequency to my friend's Lebanese specialties. I haven't eaten any Lebanese food in years, except tabouli, but I guarantee you I will from now on. Sitti is highly recommended!

The Weather, a Party and a Rant

Check out this site and you'll always know your weather!!

*****
When you enter your draft file and see nothing ready to flesh out and post, do you panic a little? I do - and just did. Since yesterday's post was #1200, I guess I can find something to tell you; having been so prolific over the last three years. I think it is referred to as 'verbal diarrhea!'

At the Flower Shuttle last Tuesday, an acquaintance offered to pick me up for a party for our local florist wholesale's fifth anniversary. There was good food, live music, beautiful flowers (of course) and discounts!! I love discounts. I didn't need to buy much - but I got to choose a small envelope from a container of many to see what my discount was. Only 5%, but that's better than nothing, right? I said that "most likely, all of the envelopes said 5%", and while the clerk laughed, I don't think he appreciated the joke.

Some of the food was compliments of the Angus Barn, a restaurant I've told you about before. They have a signature cheese served in a crock that is so good you'll find yourself eating nothing else. There was a tray of crudite, one of fruit, chicken tenders, shrimp and good sauces for all. The dessert table included pecan pie - my very favorite! It's too bad I forgot my camera - yet again.

When Teri pulled up in front of the party place, I laid my sunglasses on the dashboard of her car, because they were too large to fit into my small purse. You know the rest, don't you? When we left the party, it was dark and I didn't remember my sunglasses. Remarkably, they stayed in one place on the dashboard, so neither of us thought about them. Teri let me off at home and about ten minutes later, I happened to see a car stopped at our mailbox. I didn't think too much about it, since some small business owners will put advertising on the mailbox post at night. About thirty minutes later, Teri called and said it was she who was at the mailbox - depositing my forgotten sunglasses. I felt badly that I had forced her to backtrack; especially in an area with which she is not so familiar. The next time, I will be careful to place my sunglasses in such a way that they can't be missed. It isn't like me to forget things like that and I hate to be inconsiderate. Are you forgetful?

*****

Some of you may have noticed fewer comments from me. There are two reasons for that. My computer is slowing, and sometimes the comment boxes don't open (or open too slowly) and I get impatient waiting for them. The other thing is that after I write my comment, I have to click on "post" as many as five times before it "takes" and posts the comment. I suppose I need to clear the cache again, and run ad-ware and spy-ware programs. That's getting to be an every week thing around here. Bah.
