As I finished reading Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet today, the last three or so chapters were punctuated by my great, shoulder-shaking sobs. Don't let that dissuade you from reading this wonderful story - though the sobs were not completely happy - they were bittersweet to say the least.
Written by Jamie Ford, who is the great-grandson of Nevada mining pioneer Min Chung, who came to San Francisco in 1865 where he took the name "Ford," it is the story of Henry; a young Chinese boy growing up in Seattle, who fell in love with a Japanese schoolmate during WW2. There were, as you might imagine, unfortunate as well as fortunate aspects to that relationship, making for a really good story.
I urge you to read this impressive debut novel.

I'm reading the reviews and I like the story line, this definitely going on my night stand tomorrow. Thanks for the recommendation Kenju, your a doll.
I will be looking for books to read following my hip op. This one goes on my list.
I hope it is not too depressing. I found the Time Traveler's Wive a really depressing book.
Sounds like a good story . I will add it to the ever growing pile on the headboard. Thanks Judy.
Oh my. One book for private time, what with all the crying...
Thanks for the recommendation. I'm always looking for a good book!
Thanks for the recommendation. I'm going to write this down and look for it.
Hi Judy,
Thanks for the book tip. I love to read and the story you outlined sounds so interesting.
Now that you have finished that book, along the same lines you should read " Snow Falling On Cedars" by David Guterson. A wonderful book..
Nancy, I am thinking that I have read that book - but I can't recall the story. I have that problem, since I read so many.
It isn't depressing, Tabor.
Tiff, you and others might not cry. I'm just very sentimental.
I'm always looking for good books, so thanks much for this recommendation. It will go on the list.
Dissuade me? I love a good sob but my reading list gets longer and longer.
OK....off to see if it has a Kindle issue.
Thanks for the review--have you read "Snow Falling on Cedar"? About a white-Japanese relationship during WW2 and afterwards?

I have just added your and Nancy's recommendations to my list. --- Now if I could just get to the library.-- My list runneth over.
thanks for stopping by my blog so often. I've got you on my Reader now, so will get your posts in a timely fashion.
Thanks Judy, I just put it on my list.
Sounds like I'll enjoy this book.
Like Darlene said I just have to get to the library! It's a small library and the parking is not good, sometimes I have to circle around and around until a space is available.
That sounds like something I'd enjoy reading. I'll have to look for it. Thanks for sharing!
I bet they will make it into a movie.
It sounds like a good read. If it ends badly, it would ruin my day, though.
On a happier note, THANKS so much for every vote you have cast for Courtney's photo. It was so nice of you to keep up with the voting. If you or your kids or grandkids ever need me to click and vote for anything... YOU can count on me! I was happy to see that our votes for Emily (I think that was her name) through Bev's Cystic Fybrosis link had won!! Blog buddies and fb pals really do make a difference!!
Thanks for the recommendation. I'll give it a try.
Oh, I enjoyed that book back in the Spring. I listened to it while I was knitting! I'm doing a lot of that these days. :)
Sounds like a great book, I'll have to look into it... :)
