Centennial Stories

Edited below.

In 1961 or 62, when West Virginia was planning its Centennial Celebrations, I was a college student. Someone (who supposedly had something to do with the planning process) asked me to design and submit a seal that could be the official state centennial seal, and used on state materials pertaining to the centennial. This was not to be the official state seal - that was adopted in 1863. The above was my submission, and it was supposed to contain items which would symbolize West Virginia's strengths. I included our state flower, the state bird, coal, the steel and chemical industries, forestry, fishing, bears, etc. I was told I'd get paid for it if my seal was selected. I never got any money or heard any more about it - but years later I saw a design they used in 1963 and it was very similar to this one.

Pride, like laudanum and other poisonous medicines, is beneficial in small, though injurious in large, quantities. No man who is not pleased with himself, even in a personal sense, can please others.

Frederick Saunders, librarian and essayist (1807-1902)

I'm off to the doctor's this morning. Catch you later!

The doc made it official - I have a sinus infection, just as I thought. I've had too many of them over the years not to know, but I was stupid to wait this long to see the doc. Now I'm on two scripts and one behind-the-counter thing that had to be signed for. I hate taking antibiotics, but hopefully they will do the trick and my headaches will go away. Thanks to all who left comments; it's so nice to know that people care.

I certainly hope all goes well for you today. I feel guilty so often because I visit you every day and think of you as a friend -- but I'm just another lurker. I live in a retirement community, and so I often share your experiences and humor at dinner time. If I miss a few days quoting you, my friends ask "How is your NC friend?" They even ask regularly about Mr. Kenju.
God bless...

I am so pleased that you left a comment, MareDog. I am honored. Tell you friends I said hello and I do hope that you will comment often. Blogging is so rewarding for me - and you are part of the reason for that.

Good luck at the docs this morning. I loved your representation of the centennial. Especially the cardinal. I have come to love them living here as long as I have. :-)

Hope there is nothing major from the doc visit. A number of years ago Absolut vodka did an all state contest and had local artists from each state do a drawing/picture that contained state elements and also incorporated vodka somehow. Steve bought the Idaho one. Potatoes, worms, space ships, other weird stuff in the Idaho winner's drawing. It is hanging in the upstairs living room...Steve is "proud" of the thing but does not want it in his office. Your state seal is perfect for West Virginia.

Good!!! I hate taking any kind of meds but sometimes they're essential. I hope thie stuff he gave you does the trick and you're feeling better quickly. If your weather's been as erratic as ours, it probably hasn't helped. Do take care and get well!!!!!

So glad it is something that can be corrected easily. I have sinus problems regularily but the infection takes a bit of agressive treatment. Do as the good Doc says and be much better soon.

Glad you found out what was causing the headaches. I always put off going to the doctor, too.

There's nothing quite as painful as sinus issues. I suffer from frequent sinus headaches. It's horrible!
I hope you feel better soon!

I know exactly how those sinus things go.

I wanted to comment on the arrangement above with the fruits and vegetables... IT IS GORGEOUS! And what a lovely, lovely and generous idea too. She must have been an extra-beautiful bride.. inside and out!
