Go Fly a Kite

Do click to enlarge! Flying kites is a revered past time at the beach, and we'll never let it be said that we didn't cover all the bases. My younger daughter bought three kites at the dollar store, and they flew better than any other kites we've ever had! At least one of them did. When the first kid got tired of holding the kite string, she tied it onto the arm of a beach chair. That kite flew high from that chair for over two hours, serving as a beacon to the children that this was our tent. As the boys wandered back from the surfing area, they picked up the kite and flew it even higher. After dinner, one boy (the shark-catcher-pin-up) proudly had all three kites up at one time. You can say what you want to about current technology and scientific advances; flying a kite is a great event for a child and in my book, it beats all the video games ever produced.

(Anna, this one's for you. A looking upward, if ever I saw it, plus a straight line!)

Hey there! It's my first time visiting your site and, I must say, I was very pleased to read your post on kite-flying. Truly, two of the best days we've had in the last few months were those we spend flying kites at the beach and the park. It never ceases to captivate my children's attention!

There always seem to be kites flying on top of Mt. Trashmore... I haven't flown one since I was a kid. You are so right! Better than a video game by far!

Kites always remind me of Mary Poppins and the song... Let's Go Fly A Kite!

My daddy LOVED flying those stunt kites, and he must have taught dozens of people to fly them over the years at Atlantic Beach. This was a nice reminder.

Beach kite flying is the best. Absolutely worth risking sunburn for!

I had two kits as a child adn I could never get either to fly. I rememebr being truly dismayed. I later learnt that box kites are quite hard to fly (I was 5 at the time) and that no-one could get the Golden Eagle kite I had to fly so I was glad to find out it wasn't just me! I do feel I've missed out though.

What a colorful kite! That's so much fun to go out with the kids and play, the winds here at this time of year are perfect for this!

I couldn't agree more. What a nice story this is. In Redondo we have a big kite flying festial. It's magical.

Gotta love what wind a little bit of light fabric can do together.

I can't wait to fly a kite with Isabella. It beats the video games and tv shows that kids seem to be so absorbed in these days.

So true, Kenju!
You made me remember that the only trophy I ever got was on a kite building and flying contest in the company I worked for. I'll tell the story in my blog one of these days...

It's a great event in my book too Judy. Every so often I'll see a kid out there running around; but I wish I saw more of it...I just love it.
