Happy Birthday to My Daughter

On July 15, 1969, I gave birth to a baby girl. She was beautiful then and she still is. We are very proud of the woman she has become and I look forward to seeing what she can accomplish in the future. She has given us four gorgeous, wonderful grandchildren; she went back to school several years ago and became an R.N., and she loves her work.

Sweetheart, we hope that this next year will prove to be one of your very best!! We love you always!

Through the Years

My sweet "sonny boy" turns 45 tomorrow morning at 4:50. Here he is at 7 months (my favorite photo of his babyhood. It was his "What are you going to do next?" look.

Here he is at 7 or 8, in Virginia Beach, showing off his muscles. He is still built like that, by the way. He plays basketball several times a week and outruns the younger guys.

With his beloved Cayce, who grew to be 95 pounds and had the worst breath of any animal I've ever known. She was a sweetie, though, and his children could climb all over her and she never complained.

With his wife and girls, who are now approaching 13 and 16, so this was taken a while back. Isn't he handsome? He is almost the spitting image of my birth father.  Happy Birthday, Son, we love you!

'Toons on Saturday

I think the guy who writes this one spies on me and mr. kenju.

Did you ever have a boss like this? Luckily, I can say I never did.

Surely you know someone like this....LOL....I can't be the only one.  I'm pretty sure this sums up how mr. kenju feels about his funeral. His birthday is next week and he's been saying for months that he doesn't want  a party or any "big to do". Now most people might take that at face value, but I happen to know him well enough that what he says in respect to this is the polar opposite of what he wants to happen. However, I am not a party giver. I'll make dinner for 2-6 people, but that's my upper limit for entertaining. I've told him over and over that he's getting what he asked for  -  NO party and NO "big to do" - and I don't think he believes me. The family will be here, and we are going out to a fancier dinner than we would ordinarily have - but no party. I'm serious - NO party!  Maybe now he'll believe me.

Notable Quotes + a Birthday

Insane people are always sure that they are fine. It is only the sane people who are willing to admit that they are crazy.

Nora Ephron, novelist (b. 1941)

A beautiful thing is never perfect. (Too bad Heidi Montag doesn't know this)

Egyptian proverb

The animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours, they move finished and complete, gifted with extension of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren; they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendor and travail of the earth.

Henry Beston, naturalist and author (1888-1968)

Today is Mr. Kenju's birthday. For three months of the year, I am "a year older" than he. As of today, we are the same age until next October. I'm sure that is exciting news for you.....lol. We are going to his favorite place in Chapel Hill; the Weathervane at A Southern Season, for lunch, with two of our children and our son's family. I'll let you know how it goes.

True Friendship

1. When you are sad, I will jump on the person who made you sad like a spider monkey jacked up on Mountain Dew!!!

2. When you are blue, I will try to

dislodge whatever is choking you.

3. When you smile, I will know you are

plotting something that I must be

involved in.

4. When you're scared, we will high

tail it out of here...
5. When you are worried, I will tell

you horrible stories about how much

worse it could be until you quit

whining, ya’ big baby!!!!

6. When you are confused, I will use

little words.

7. When you are sick, stay away

from me until you are well again.

I don't want whatever you have.....

8. When you fall, I'll pick you up

and dust you off, after I laugh!

9. This is my oath... I pledge it to

the end.

'Why?' you may ask; because you are my FRIEND!

I hope the email above fits the available space on my blog, because I surely do not want to change it all again!

A true friend of mine took me out to brunch on Saturday, at Brio, to celebrate my birthday (the 30th). I like to celebrate them well, and starting a week early - and going 10-20 days after - is often done. If you have a Brio nearby, I'd suggest the French Toast with berries - and I'd be sure to go very hungry!! It is the best French toast I've ever had (and mr. kenju said the same thing about the left-overs I brought back for him) and the service was excellent today.

Quotes of Note and a Cartoon

Hey........I think that cartoonist knows my husband!! The one who, when he looks in the mirror, still sees the 25 year old basketball player, with the chiseled chin and no belly at all. LOL (Found in The New Yorker Magazine.)

Once a government is committed to the principle of silencing the voice of opposition, it has only one way to go, and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all its citizens and creates a country where everyone lives in fear.

Harry S. Truman, 33rd US president (1884-1972)

Strike an average between what a woman thinks of her husband a month before she marries him and what she thinks of him a year afterward, and you will have the truth about him. -

H.L. Mencken, writer, editor, and critic (1880-1956)

You can't live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you. -John Wooden, sports coach (b. 1910)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MILLIE!!

Today is Millie's birthday, and I hope you will all go and tell her to have a happy one. If you are not a reader of her blog, stay around a while and you'll see why we love her so much. Millie is the queen of American elderbloggers!!

One very good way to upgrade your brain is to read Ronni Bennett's Time Goes By. Ronni is the go-to person for information and interesting articles regarding elders/seniors (whatever you wish to call us). You may not be an elder at present, but someday you might be - and Ronni's blog will keep you informed of all the issues concerning life in the golden years. You will also enjoy her other site: The Elder Storytelling Place.

Ronni is having a birthday (Monday), she's finally reached MY age!! and I hope you will go and wish her the best birthday ever. I hope to see you there!

JUST IMAGINE!

Today is the first birthday of Imagine What I'm Leaving Out. In that year, more than 54,373 of you have clicked here, and some even stayed around long enough to read a bit. I thank you all, from the cockles of my heart (whatever they are) and I hope you will find it worthwhile to come back again and again.

Thanks for the good wishes yesterday; the Epsom salts bath was great for relieving sore muscles and I slept like a baby. The muscle spasms came roaring back this morning, though, so I am going to schedule another massage for next Friday. After standing on my feet for 4 days in preparation for Valentine's Day - I'll need it!

On October 30, 1940...

this woman gave birth to me, then gave me to my adoptive parents. I didn't meet her until I was 57, and I have seen her three or four times since then. We visited again last August, when I went back to my home town for a school reunion. Our story has been told here several times, but in case you haven't read it, go here. Today, I am 67, and it is hard to imagine, but she and I both are still going strong. Life handed her lemons, but she made lemonade every single time. Maybe it's genetic.

Quotes of Note and Happy Birthday!

My baby turns 36 on Thursday! Happy Birthday, my sweet child - who's easily bored but always curious about the world!

I may be a despicable person, but when Truth speaks through me I am invincible.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948)

The most futile thing in this world is any attempt, perhaps, at exact definition of character. All individuals are a bundle of contradictions --none more so than the most capable.
