Here is the kitchen after we painted it Glidden's "Sassafras Tea", a pale yellowish green. The color choice wasn't mine, but I bowed to mr. kenju and miss kenju, who prefer lighter colors than I. It looks different in every photo. The photo truest to the real color is the middle one.
We are stuck with these ugly, ancient, yellow formica countertops and backsplash; at least for a while. I wanted a slightly darker, sage green; one that would be a better contrast for the counters, but mr. kenju says it won't be long before we get new counters. I admit that I am loving the new lightness in there. Miss kenju has always said our house resembles a mausoleum. If she had her way, everything would be white! I don't think I could live in a place that was all white. An artistic person goes nuts without color (at least, this one does).
This is my small desk area, which is barely used, but makes for good storage of things needed occasionally, like cook books.
If you want to see what it looked like before, go here.
I had much more stuff on the walls before, and I decided to mix it up a bit and not keep adding to it as I have always done before. I am resisting the urge to put most of it back.....LOL. The extras are all in a box, and as soon as I re-do the back hallway off the kitchen, it will go there.

Thanks to mr. kenju's basketball contacts at Georgetown, we secured two tickets to the NCAA Games today, pitting Georgetown against Davidson and UNC against Arkansas. Miss kenju and I went to the RBC Center here in Raleigh and the stands were a sea of Carolina blue. If you're following the games, you know that Davidson won a hard fought battle, and UNC gave Arkansas the trouncing of their lives. I really enjoyed myself. The last time I remember seeing a live basketball game was the first one ever played in the Dean Dome in Chapel Hill, in 1984.

I love the color you chose, or the other Kenjus chose, for the kitchen. I'm one of those people with all white walls and no wall paper. In my other two houses I had wallpaper and colored walls, but I have found that the white really is easy--and what is on the walls can stand out more.
I like the colour Judy, and I like the yellow countertops too, but I'm partial to yellow. :) Like you, I'm someone who needs colour around me, though I've had to compromise on a few occasions too.
Re-doing a kitchen creates such chaos doesn't it?
I do like the new color. It shows off all of your wall mounted collectibles. I have a fondness for sage green as well, although not one room in my house is that color.
What a difference in the before and after shot! It definitely looks more modern now and it's a nice color. I also, need color in my house... can't stand white walls. :-)
I know what you're feeling about the whole color thing. When I met my husband, he had owned several apartments, and he was under the impression that anything other than egg-shell white was just nonsense. AAAHHHH! That's just like living in a hospital for me. There were a few times I chose a horrid color that just didn't work on the walls, but I kept trying and although most of my rooms are still white, I have a couple that fill my need for that splash of color... and they are 'good' colors.
I think the kitchen looks good. bright and open. Your fellow kenjus did a great job!
It looks wonderful. I'm sure you will be happy with it.
I live in a small rented house now, and all walls are eggshell. I try to cure the blandness with pictures.
It looks great!
Great new color!
Man, I'm jealous of the b-ball thing. COllege hoops are awesome.
Yay for new surroundings! I've been doing a lot of painting lately, from tans and mochas to fire-engine red, but currently there is bright white overspray all over the yard from my project.
New paint sure changes the feel of a room, doesn't it?
I think your kitchen looks really lovely...! And you are right about the Lightness...It makes a huge difference, doesn't it?
Congratulations Judy, on NOT putting everything back up....LOL!
Oh I understand that so much.....I mean the temptation to put it ALL back up.
Thanks so much for your help with the names of the flowers...I knew you would know my dear!
ixjgkuakHi Judy,
I went to the link you supplied and looked at your "Old" Wallpaper and immediately recognized it as the same paper I had in my kitchen once. You know the orange flowers and all.
Well, when we decided to spruce up the kitchen the painter came and started to remove that old paper. The orange flowers. Then he came to another layer. Blue teapots;then another layer;green ivy trailing down the wall. It began to resemble an archiological dig. I would look at the layer of paper and say,"I remember that paper. We got that the year Steve broke his arm; and there's the blue teapot; Carol loved that when she was going with Paul. And now, what's this next layer? Oh! yeah. it's the blue and yellow birds. Chris wanted that paper and didn't Jerry select the little cow jumped over the moon motif?
So, they stripped it down to the bare wall and we painted it yellow and now all of that paper and all of those memories are gone and ,I must say, I really miss them......
Judy I love the new look!
Now I realise I need to make changes!
It looks good! I think it will look even better when you replace your countertops.
I too would have gone with "Sage green" :)
Wow, you were there, I didn't watch much of the Carolina game as it really wasn't very interesting when they're up by 30...
I'm like you, I don't like white walls, either. Photos and art work tend to look washed out on a white wall.
To echo what Fran said, I do like the colors you, or the other Kenju's choose, however!
And March Madness has been so full of surprise upsets this year! Have fun tonight, I'm sure Mr. Kenju is gonna have a blast!
I love the color you chose - actually, the counter tops look OK to me with the walls. Lots of work to paint!Looks good.
The new color looks great!
Rue :)
Did my Daddy do that painting?
:)
Oh, and I LOVE color! EVERYWHERE!
That looks a lovely eau de nil colour. I'd have that anywhere and lucky you that Mr Kenju promised new tops.
I love the kitchen....I want new counter tops too.....lots of $$$$$.
Looks like all your hard work paid off. It's really nice!!
I..for one..love the yellow...it brings warmth & sunshine to your kitchen. I would love to have all that counter space. Esp..in winter..I need warm, sunny colors.
