My First Visit to Wegman's.....

I hope will not be my last. On Monday night, as my daughter and I were finishing our trip from WV to the DC area, we went to Wegman's, after she discovered I had never been to one. My Lord, what a place!! The only grocery that I've been to that even came close was Giant Open Air Market in Norfolk (45 years ago), where you could walk in at any time of the day or night (364 days per year), go to the meat department, choose your steak, take it to the restaurant and they would cook it to your specs and charge only the price of the steak. You could add a baked potato and a salad for about $1.50.

We walked around Wegman's a bit to get the stiffness out of my joints (six + hours in the car with few stops) and settled in the seafood area, where we both ordered pan-seared tilapia; mine with with lemon butter and broccoli and hers served over field greens. It was excellent, quick and inexpensive (only $10 per plate). Contrast that with my breakfast the next morning in the hotel:  $9.25 for eggs and bacon, and lunch: a turkey and havarti sandwich with chips and a soda - $11 something. I think if I lived near a Wegman's, I'd eat there at least three times a week - and I don't even like grocery shopping! NOTE to Wegman's owners:  you should consider moving into North Carolina (specifically Raleigh), to compete with Fresh Market and Whole Foods. I think you'd win, hands down!!

Last night, we went to the Sweetwater Tavern in Falls Church. The waiter said the magic words for me during his recitation of the night's specials:  mahi-mahi. I have loved it ever since I went to Hawaii in 1982. It was served with cauliflower mash, which was sweet and smooth, and two of the biggest asparagus spears I've ever seen (they were very tender to be so large, and very fresh.) I remembered to take a photo of my plate, but I can't show it to you until I get back home. Eating there was a pleasure, so if you ever come close to them (they have 3 places in this area) treat yourself. They also brew their own beer on the premises, but I didn't have any. Daughter ate the "small" portion of prime rib, which was large enough for two, if you ask me. She ate every bite of that, the mashed potatoes, and the Caesar salad.

Despite the initial reason for this trip (the funeral), it has turned out to be delightful in every way, and of course, spending alone time with any of my children is wonderful. We will get home tonight; wish us luck, as there are more storms forecast for the areas we have to drive through.

Wow! Thanks so much for sharing your first Wegmans experience. We are so humbled by your review. We're so glad to hear you enjoyed your meal with your daughter.

As far as building locations in North Carolina, at the moment we do not have plans to build stores there.

Here's a link to where we're building next: http://www.wegmans.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/FAQDetailView?langId=-1&storeId=10052&catalogId=10002&faqCategory=AboutWegmans#question_16

Wishing you safe travels on your drive home

Hope to see you again soon!

Wegman's sounds delightful. I have never heard of them and I have never heard of a shopping center that you can buy your food and have them cook it. Wow, that is amazing. I don't know if that would be a winner here in Colo. But, we do have a Whole Foods which is the store we shop at. I LOVE Whole Foods :)

Glad you are having quality time with your daughter. It makes the loss of your friend easier.

Here's to a safe trip home for the two of you!

I LOVE when you describe the food you have eaten at different restaurants and at home, too..This one made my mouth water...! And I haven't even had my Breakfast yet...lol!

So nice that your time with your dear daughter was so very very nice, despite the original reason for your trip, my dear.

Thinking of you and those terrible storms!

Yummy sounding eats, Judy! A good supermarket IS hard to find. Have a great holiday and many thanks for staying connected!

I'm glad it has turned out to be a happy trip in spite of the reason. It's a shame that sometimes it takes a funeral for friends and loved ones to get together.
I feel blessed that over this next month I'll see my son, my grandson, my granddaughter and my niece.

Interesting post to read.

Dumbo has his tail in the air. Yes, they run, especially with the tail up. Real ones. Artists can take liberties...

I've never been to one, sounds interesting as I enjoy grocery stores more than any other kind of store

My sister used to live in Fairfax County, Virginia - I'll bet I've been to the very Wegman's you went to. It is a great store.

I miss that area - they have moved away to the Shenandoah Valley now.

Judy,
First off, I'm catching up and am so sorry to hear the death of your friend. It's never easy...I'm glad you were able to make it to the service/funeral to pay your final respects.

Wegmans sounds wonderful! It kind of reminds me of Whole Foods...

I hope you got home safe!

Most Canadians bristle at the incursion of American corporate chains, Walmart being the most recent example, but when I read about places like Wegmans I can't help but wish for more of them to come north of the border. We already have Whole Foods - one is coming to my neighbourhood within the next couple of years and I'm already excited! (So far the development is a very big hole in the ground.)

We would go to Wegmanss when we visited relatives in Rochester, NY-like it was a tourist attraction.

My condolences to you after the death of a close friend.

Wegmans sounds like a must see. If I ever get a chance I will. Think I will check that link they provided. How nice it was that they commented.

Glad to hear your trip ended up on a high note. I've never heard of Wegman's, what a delightful concept. Good food can and company can ease the mournful heart a little.
