The Kitchen, Infamous Though It May Be

Here it is, in all its non-glory. What it needs?  New counter tops, a new backsplash, a new cook top, a new vent hood, a new floor, the cabinets need to be painted inside and cleaned well on the outside. I'd also like a new (non-mullioned) window with a deep sill, so I could keep herb plants there. The color green on the walls needs to be changed to something a bit sunnier and I could really use a new, stainless-steel microwave.

I got an email from the woman who first contacted me about showing my photo on TV and when they taped the show yesterday, they did use my photo. However, there is no assurance it will remain when they do the final edit of the show. She is going to let me know if it survived the cut and when the show will air - and I will let you know when I do. Meanwhile, if there is any show that would like to re-do my kitchen to show on TV - they are more than welcome!

Wouldn't that be fun if someone wanted to remodel your kitchen on their show - Dear Genevieve comes to mind. I always love her renovations.

I am redoing my slowly to save money. I had someone refinish my cabinets to a glossy cherry finish (what a mess with the sanding) and he put in a cherry laminate floor. New hardware on the cabinets, too. When the appliances start breaking, I'll switch to stainless steel. And I, too, have a formica counter top that needs replacing, but mine is just an off white color. It doesn't look bad.

I like your better than mine. I have these horrible bathroom-tile counter tops that are impossible to keep clean, and it's so tiny... Yours would probably make me happier.

Not to be one of those "be happy for what you have because I have it worse" type of people, but I would LOVE to have your kitchen. The last five places I have lived in the past 20 years have had less than 3 feet total of counter space, usually with a sink cutting into the middle of it all.

All that said, I do understand wanting something fresh and different. Good luck in your search for a make-over!

My kitchen is configured just like that and it could use some serious updating as well.

Your kitchen looks a lot better & is bigger then mine (I have the smallest kitchen in the world) but I can see what you would like to do with it. The new window would look wonderful. Back splashes are always great. Your cabinets look fantastic but I understand compeletly about what you would like to do to them.

Will be looking forward to your next post to see if your kitchen made the cut. This is so exciting!!

I wish I had your kitchen -- mine is pathetic at best.

Not ugly, I'd trade you in a nano second. Mine's ok, basic 1920's with newer counter tops but being tall I have to stoop over them somewhat. The floor is battered. Someday... I think everyone should post their kitchen photos just for fun!

My grandchildren just look at their plates and will tell you that Granny Annie's Kitchen is the most beautiful in the world.

I've got used to white now - with the odd colour, and would miss it.

If you think your kitchen is ugly you should see 90% of the ones out there ! Yours is clean and neat as a pin! That alone is more than most.

Well, mine looked a lot like yours.. in Mississippi. It was smaller... I don't think the builders of the house (it was a custom build) ever cooked. The cabinets hanging down blocked the view to the eating area and the den. So I had cabinets hanging over the counter where yours is free.

I had them take down the cabinets... and tore out the bulkheads and put cabinets in all the way to the ceiling but not over the counter to the eating area. I like honey oak..so honey oak it was. All the lower cabinets had pull out drawers... I cannot recommend those enough. It so saves on your back. I had a nice and useful lazy susan in the corner and a pull out place for the garbage can. If I had it to do again, I would have put in a gas stove top instead of electric and would have put in two ovens in the wall... one large regular/convection and perhaps a second microwave/convection.

I did solid countertops... not Corian but like them. I know those are a bit outdated but you could easily use a Mr. Clean sponge scrub bar and get out any stain and they are easy to use a fine sandpaper on to take care of scratches. I like granite too, that is what we have here. Stainless steel might be nice but it does scratch more than granite. The other reason I liked the solid tops were because they are easy to sterilize... the bacteria from uncooked food doesn't get down in crevices like butcherblock.

Two things I would have done different.... backsplash of small glass blocks... and ceramic tile on the floor. Didn't do that and should have. I should have shied away from the wallpaper too, although it was quite lovely.

I'd love my kitchen to be remodelled - or at least, re-coloured! I'm tired of the green we have on the unit fronts. But it would take Mr.G for ever to repaint them!

Beautiful kitchen, the counter tops are clean (looks like they need to be used!)

I'm getting ready to have my kitchen cabinets redone. Your kitchen looks great to me but I know the latest styles are different. Here's hoping you make the cut.
