T & A

I bet THAT got your attention.....LOL.....get your mind out of the gutter!!

It stands for Tipper and Al
who have, sadly, just announced their separation after many years together.

I met Tipper Gore years ago here in Raleigh, when she had just authored a new book. Part of her book tour took her into the homes of people who were active in local Democratic politics and I was invited to one of those events. She was impressive at the time; an assured, intelligent woman who had gained a measure of attention and notoriety due to her husband's standing in political circles, and was now gaining her own authority as a writer. She was personable and friendly and those of us at the event liked her immensely.

Some time later, after Al had announced his bid for the Presidency, he came to Raleigh and there was a reception in his honor at the local Democratic headquarters, to which I was also invited. One of my floral clients was a woman who was a local fundraiser for the Democratic Party, and Al always stayed at her house when he came to town, so I had done flowers for her home several times by then (not that he knew it). When mr. kenju and I were introduced to Al, I told him I had met Tipper, and I thought she was his greatest asset and urged him to feature her during his campaigning. He agreed with me, of course (what else could he say?), although I am certain he would have liked it better had I rattled off some knowledge of his qualifications and/or fine points, rather than hers.

I will say this; he was tall, fairly nice looking and much more personable and warm than he seems on TV. His TV appearances show him to be stiff and somewhat uneasy and in person he was anything but. Too bad all his campaigning couldn't have been face to face.

Over the years, Tipper and Al have seemed to be the perfect couple, so it is disconcerting now to read that they are calling it quits after forty years of marriage.

I wonder what the real story is? How can two people who have shared so much be "growing apart?"

I was surprised, too. Wish them the best - maybe they'll reconsider if that's the best -

Maybe they just shared and were never together??

Or maybe Tipper had just had enough of pretending to be happily mnarried?

Or maybe Al had been having a secret affair......

Or maybe....?

Well one thing sure, it is not the seven year itch!

I was indeed saddened by the news that T&A were divorcing. They always seemed like they had a good solid marriage. But you never know what goes on behind closed doors I guess. I can't help but think there is much more than growing apart going on, and they are choosing to try and keep it private. If not, and they are just legally ending their partnership because they choose not to work at it, I would be most disappointed.

I know what you mean, it seems that after 40 years you would be so tightly bound to one another that nothing would make you want to call it quits. Unfortunately, it is becoming less common for people to leave 20 or 30 year marriages. Very sad!

I think we all were shocked by this; but as we all know...you never really know that state of someone's relationship looking in from the outside. I can't imagine what would make them grow apart after all they've been through together; and that's why I think there's probably more to their separation than they've said. It's a rare thing to see after 40 years of sharing your lives together. ~Joy

It was surprisingly sad to me to read that they were splitting up. I guess we never know what is really happening in a marriage. People do grow apart. Who knows, maybe after all these years Tipper was ready for a simple life of retirement and writing, and Al is still going strong trying to wake the world up to global climate change. I wish them both few tears and easy hearts.

Like everyone else, I am waiting for the rest of the story.

It certainly does seem bizarre--unless there is much we are not privy to...
A dear old friend of mine and her husband, who had been married for over 40 years, looked like they were going to seperate but eventualy didn't because of their shared history and realizing that starting over could not replace what they had with each other.
Maybe Tipper and Al will come to that same kind of conclusion in time.
It is too bad Al Gore could not be his personable self on TV, etc. That might have made all the difference in his bid for President---Well, that and other factors of course---like the Supreme Court.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was just a case of two separate lives being led. AG has been so involved in new endeavors (ie Global Warming), perhaps TG wasn't interested or involved with. I was surprised at their parting of ways, you would have thought the Clintons would have separated first. Amazing, isn't it?

I find it amazing when power couples like the Gores can stay together.

I guess that "kiss" should have started us thinking... at the time it was more of a "keep it in the bedroom" reaction... now, perhaps it was a "trying too hard to look happy" moment.

But, I really did think Hillary and Bill would break up first.... not counting that out either.
