Out to Dinner and Home for Dessert

We went out to dinner with friends tonight - to Nina's - where I ate a spinach salad with grilled shrimp, bacon bits, dried cranberries and an excellent dressing, along with eggplant saltimbocca - my usual fare there.

I asked mr. k to take my picture, since you haven't seen me with longer hair (but it sure doesn't look very long here.)

I set the table for dessert and coffee before we left, and added a centerpiece of two gardenias and some candles after this photo was taken.

I baked an apple pie and decided to throw in a handful of blackberries. I think there were about twenty in it. It turned the apples a pinkish red and gave the whole pie an added taste and texture. It was pretty good, if I do say so myself!!

I'm not the best pie crust finisher; in fact, I'm mediocre at it, but I thought this one turned out fairly well. For someone who is pretty good with her hands, I can't model clay and I can't crimp pie dough either. But since taste is more important than looks (in all but wedding cakes) I do okay.

(And yes, I do know that wedding cakes ought to taste good too - but appearance is most important!)

A close-up of the pie. Don't you want to dive in through that hole? I sure do!!

That pie looks sooooo great.. and here I am trying to be so good and stay away from such things.

I have been so sore the last couple of days. I had mulch delivered and... of course... I have almost twice as much as I needed. I have the back beds mulched and plan to bag up the rest to use later... if it will ever get cool enough to do so. My knees have really told me what they think of this project.

I like the new hairdo, it adds a extra softness to your face.

The pie looks great and I am sure tasted yummy! My mother taught me to finish off the edge of a tart/pie with the prongs of a fork. Working all the way round the plate the extra pressure helps seal the edge as well as add finish to the look.

You look Marvelous. I'm letting my hair grow. It is a mess in all this humidity.

Mama always crimped her pie crust with a fork. It makes a nice neat edge. I always admired hand-crimped that stand up pretty. I can do it, but not that well. You are right. Taste matters most.

I'm so glad Mr Kenja took a photo of you - you look great and I love that outfit. What a lovely looking lady and the pie is not bad either.

All in all sounds like a very nice evening - dinner and then back to your house for a homemade dessert.

Yum

Lovely photo. Next time ask him to avoid the picture behind your head.
the pie looks perfect. You must have cool hands - the sign of a good pastry maker. Do you have it with cream, custard or au naturel?

You look great Judy ! I am also crust challenged. I have come to rely on store bought ones more and more. Like you, the finished product always tasted way better than it looked.
