Mr. K Goes to the Doctor

Today was mr. kenju's day at the doctor's office; the time for his yearly physical, blood work and an unexpected (and dreaded) tetanus booster. Mr. k has what is described as "white coat hypertension", meaning that his blood pressure rises when he is in the presence of medical personnel. Today was no exception, although now that he is on BP meds, it doesn't rise as high as it used to.

As usual, when you are having blood work done, you can't eat anything after midnight. Under normal circumstances, mr. k approaches meals as spiritual experiences - and God forbid you get between him and his food. On mornings when he is forbidden to eat, all hell can break loose and you are well advised to lie low until breakfast is available. Somehow I never manage to do that and I bear the brunt (verbally) of my words or actions.

His appointment was at 9 am, and before we got to eat it was after 11am. I had coffee before we left the house, but no breakfast - in sympathy for the patient. By the time 10 am rolled around, I was regretting that decision. I am not as ravenous as he in the morning, but I do need sustenance before too many hours have passed. My blood sugar must have taken a dive, because I almost fell asleep at the restaurant and I didn't revive until after I had taken another two hour nap. If this doesn't stop, I'll be sleeping my life away.

Oh, how I hate it when my hubby or I can't eat before any tests. We both have hyperglycemeia and it sounds like thats what happened to you. Eating a banana or having orange juice helps. Next time make sure you have something in your tum tum :)

I hope his tests come out ok

I don't get really hungry usually! However, tell me I can't eat after midnight and I'm ravenous

So is Mr. kenju okay?

Mr.G suffers from white coat hypertension too! I think a lot of men do. Hope all the tests turn out OK. Very noble of you to give up your breakfast as well. Don't think I could have done that!

Judy, allergy meds often cause sleepiness. But if it goes on, I think you should check it out.

Mr Kenju - bless him - is going to be grumpy whatever you do so please look after yourself and don't make pointless sacrifices.

My BP sky rockets at the doctor too. I hate having to fast before testing...But, it makes breakfast after taste SO good! :-)

I'm like Kay. Ok till you say I can't. Good idea about eating something yourself though. In sympathy, you can sneak it while he is getting ready. Just make sure he can't smell it on your breath.
Hope all his tests came out OK.

At least his appointment was in the morning! My blood pressure only rises at the dentist (and he doesn't check it!)

Doctors make me nervous too and I am useless without breakfast! I hope the results were good.

I trust all is well.

Had my blood work done this morning, I am thankful they start at 7am and one doesn't need an appointment so I got it done early and quickly. I need OJ, coffee and food (in that order) the minute I wake up... otherwise I am not pleasant at all.

Hope Mr K passes his yearly physical!

When Roger or I have to go in for fasting blood tests early in the morning, we bring toast and jam and a thermos of hot tea in the car, and start eating when we are driving home. Somehow that seems to make all the difference for us.

Hope all the tests results are good for Mr. K. I've avoided the tetanus booster. I know I shouldn't, but I just can't bring myself to get it done. I hear that the arm gets pretty sore afterward.

At least the lab personnel were there. I went in for my annual physical only to find out that my doctor was home sick. Now I have to wait another month to get it done. Sigh!

When you fly the stewardess says, take care of yourself first, then take care of your child.

Same way when taking care of a family member - take care of yourself FIRST.

About sleeping so much, medicines will do it every time. It might help one thing but the side effects can knock you out.

Take care
