"That's the word....."

Click to enlarge. I saw this cartoon in a back issue of The New Yorker recently, and it made me remember our trip to Europe in 2006. For some odd reason, the word 'crenellated' has stuck with me since I learned it in history class many years ago; much like the date of the Battle of Hastings (1066), which is such an important thing to remember......LOL. When we were in Italy, we saw quite a few crenellated castles, and of course, I mentioned them to mr. kenju and our daughter. Neither of them had heard that word, so I was deemed a "know-it-all"; a title which has plagued me since grade school.

Above is Palazzo Vecchio, in Firenze (Florence), Italy, quite possibly the most well known crenellated building in modern times, owing to the hordes of tourists who go there every day.

Here is another castle we passed on the train from Florence to Zurich. This was somewhere in northern Italy. I was struck by its proximity to modern buildings, having imagined all of European antiquities were out in the country, off to themselves. Boy was I ever wrong, starting with the Colisseum in Rome, which has a modern city built right up beside it!

The newish restaurant I went to today is wonderful! I had my camera, but it didn't occur to me to take photos of the food until after I had licked the plate. The decor is very nice and by the time we left, it was packed with people at every table and even into the private dining rooms.

The friend I went with said that we must go to the ladies bathroom, as she had been told to go and see the saucy pictures on the walls. We discussed what we might encounter there, and I was all set to take pix of whatever we found. What a disappointment!! There were 4 or 5 beautiful, charcoal drawings of the male body - no odd parts showing - and all done with talent and taste. How on earth some women could have thought they were "saucy" is beyond me!! I guess raunchiness is in the eye of the beholder, just as beauty is.

One woman's "chocolate" is another woman's "vanilla". I'm with you ... takes a lot to shake me up!

I have a painting, nude but not frontal, hanging in my living room and am always surprised by the reactions of folks. It's beautiful, not vile!

One person's "saucy" is another person's "stale". LOL.

Judy: I've been reading you a long time now, and find you a very bright knowledgable, interesting woman - but a know all - never.

I have known the word crenellated but seldom have a chance to use it.
Always enjoy what you come up with. Speaking of which--commercial here--my blog is back as of today. I hope you will visit.

OK...so what are those "odd parts" that I seem to not know about? Loved the photo of Palazzo Vecchio....it is stunning. But all of Florence is....

I love castles and have visited as many as I could. Crenelated or not, they make my imagination run riot.

I have a replica of Michelangelo's David -full frontal with all parts showing - an no one has found it objectionable. I guess if it's recognized art its different than a drawing in a bathroom.

Personally, I have never understood why the Puritan obsession with the nude body being shocking has survived.

hmph - all that buildup and no reward. :)

I THOUGHT I knew what crenellated meant. Now I'm sure I do. Thanks!

Great castles! I'd love to spend a summer in one of those.

So the bathroom drawings were all good- nothing "crenallated" or anything? Just sayin' ;)

It is funny what some people will consider "saucy". I guess it is all in the eye of the beholder.
