Circa 1930

I could tell you that this is a still photo from an old movie - and you might believe it - but it is my aunt and one of her boyfriends. I think it should have been a movie poster!! It reminds me of Theda Bara and Rudolph Valentino, although I have never seen either of them in a movie. My aunt was older than my mom, who was born in 1908, so I estimate this photo was taken sometime around 1928 to 1932.

There's no date on these, of course. The caption on this one says....."Dave with his hands full. " They were a playful lot, weren't they? My aunt is on the right, looking none too happy. Maybe she lost her hat.

My aunt on the left this time. The caption on this one is....."Erma sick. (So, that's why she wasn't happy.) Lillian laughing. Nell and Dave serious." It mentions three women, and there are only two in the photo. Oh, I guess Nell is a man..... LOL...heck of a name for a man unless it is short for Nelson.

My mom and my aunt (her sister) in the middle. I have no idea who the other two women are. These old pictures are such a window on the world in the 20's, at least as far as fashion goes, but they look like gun molls, don't they?

What ever happened to women's hats? I sure need them now.

In all our old family photos I can't think of one that has scenes of cutting up. These are so great and show some had a sense of humor in the olden days.

I am a bit concerned about the top photo and hope that couple was aware of STDs.

Judy,

I love those old pictures and think the women in them had a real flair for fashion.

They all look like they put a lot of thought into what they were going to wear that day.

Yes, they do look a bit like "gun molls" but that is because Hollywood showed us what a "gun moll" looked like; i.e. Bonnie Parker in real life and Theda Bara in the movies.

Great pictures. I loved looking at them.....

At my parents' home, there's a photo of my paternal grandmother that reminds of this--it was taken in 1925 just two years before she died. These are worth preserving. Make sure you write the names of the people you know on the back, before they're forgotten.

Cheers.

Perhaps a check on fashions from 1920 - 1935 would help with accurately dating these photos. Since I was just a baby then I can only judge by my family photos. I think the skirts were above the knees in the mid 1920's. However, the cloche hats fit that period.

A photo of my Mom when I was a toddler shows her wearing similar clothes and that would be 1926-1929.

Judy, those pictures are a hoot !
It always amazes me how "naughty" the young people seemed to be in those days...it's as if they are miming the movies and there were some pretty risque ones as I recall.

Nice to look back in time. A window to the past, somebody already commented. I think it's fun to see how we've changed, fashion-wise.

Fabulous photos....doesn't it amaze you how sensual that era was and yet...how fully clothed everyone was...even with hats. There was a remarkable sense of style and zest in those years.

What fantastic vintage photos. It's wonderful to be able to scan them. I tried using the scanner but I can't seem to make the image a jpeg that I can upload to my blog. :-(

Oh I LOVE LOVE LOVE these old Photo's Judy....They are really WONDEREFUL! That first one is so intimate, isn't it? To capture that much feeling of Intamacy in a photoigraph---especially back then---Well, I can see exactly why you feel it could be a movie poster...!

I'm sure that NELL must be short for Nelson or another name similar...That's a great picture, too...Well, the truth is, they are ALL Great!

That's when my mum was born. The photos could be a little earlier - just a bit maybe.
