For what it's worth, you have to realize that a lot of this is about context and relevance. A lot of this information that we don't know -- though no doubt important 113 years ago -- is useless today, and we don't need to know it. So I don't feel so bad not knowing most of it.

If you were given useless information to study, and tested on the useless information, then you'd know the answers to a lot of stuff nobody else knows, but no one would care.

Have you ever seen those quizzes to test whether the average joe adult can pass the fifth grade today? It can be embarrassing.

And no calculator either.I couldn't have passed it in eigth grade, let alone now.

Wow! But, as farrago said, much of it is not relevant today.
My mother only went as far as the 8th grade, but I don't think she even graduated. Now I know why.

Having lived in Kansas a brief while, I can guarantee you the people who passed that test had sense enough to leave Kansas and none of their offspring live there either.

Okay, I didn't know the answers either. I'm betting my spouse will. He's too darn smaat for his own good.

Darn you, Judy, I was already feeling kindof down today and now I feel downright dumb, too !!
Thank goodness for computers and "spell-check".

A tough one. My daddy only went through the eighth grade, stopping to work. It would be interesting to see what kind of test there was here in Florida.

They sure taught the basics of english, reading and basic math. Today most of our 8th graders couldn't even read the questions on this test, let alone answer them.

these eighth graders were taught how to think as well as do the math, and better yet they were taught how to write, punctuate and how to use words. today its "wuz up?"

Um, no.

But know I want to.

I agree with Gary.
Writing, punctuation and spelling is now, in my opinion (not IMO)lost to the new generation.

I do have the answers! We need to spank 'em upside the butt, take away their cell phones and ipods, get rid of standard testing and go back to basics!
there ya go.

Althoughhhh, farrago has a very good point!

I skimmed through that test, paying particular attention to the math questions. Today's kids are dumb in comparison. It's a shame!
I feel like an idiot. My brain would explode if I had to take this five-hour exam.
Our educational standards suck!
