The Crossroads

Click to embiggen!

This is the turnoff from Banff to the # 1 highway to Calgary.

They had to build a special crossing for the animals (especially the elk) because that was where the natural crossing was and after the highway was built there were far too many accidents. It didn't take the animals long to learn that this was their 'road.'

That first elk to make the crossing must have been very brave. Roads and elk usually don't mix well.

You know I love this. LOVE it. Reminds me of something I will incorporate into a post- a program that operantly conditioned eagles to avoid power lines- and the knowledge was passed on to subsequent generations!

I've actually been there and was quite scared the first time I saw an elk walking towards me on the street. They are so enormous.
Judy is embiggen a real word or just a joke from the Simpsons?

the pic didn't come up, but that's okay because I've seen it in person! I could use a soak in the hot springs at Banff right about now

I like to think that animals think. Yes I do.

Cool! I've been to Banff! Didn't see any elk or bear or moose. Just Canadians.

I love that the elk have their own road. In the UK you will often see bridges crossing a motorway from a field to a filed. They were built so that farmers could safely move their cattle. There are also tunnels under some roads so that badgers, foxes etc can cross safely.

'the green rolling hills of west virginia... the nearest thing to heaven that i love...' an old folk song that i was reminded of with your comment on my site. :)

that crossing is way cool! it's nice that they are considerate of the animals. we need something like that around here. i've never seen so many deer in my life! maybe that's b/c we live across from a corn field and woods.....

I love that photo! Thanks for sharing. We are not an area for Elk but more and more people are starting to raise them and when we see very high fences, we know they have some Elk. Such beautiful animals.

I love it! We have a deer crossing that cuts across the middle of our driveway but I never see a crowd like that.

I answered your ? on the stairs.

Here in Ariona we have some deer and elk too but nothing that would require an overpass for....I was sure I was seeing things when I "emgiggened":)
I love Jamie Dawn's elk road idea....

This is wonderful. Animals too adapt fast!

Now I will go read your story!

Glad Michele sent me here to look at that photo!

Wow, impressive! We need crossings like that for the deer here in WV. (Of course we have those little signs, but the deer just disobey them!)

Great pic!
Reminds me of what I saw in Jasper this June. I stayed at the Jasper Fairmont Lodge and they had elk walking around. We had to make a very big detour because a group of elk were standing right in our path, and we couldn't get to our cabin right away.

Thanks for the pic - I drove that road winter and summer every 2-3 weeks and it brought back great memories. In all that time, I never did see animals on the overpass.Lots of marks on the side of the road.

Kenju, although I am now out in eastern Canada, I grew up in those rockies..My sister and my mom both live in a town just outside of Calgary..and about 45 minutes from that very crossing. I make it a point to go to banff everytime I visit family. It's really a wonderfull place to visit if ever u have the chance. That photo made me homesick lol
