Pilot Mountain, NC

This is Pilot Mountain, NC, also known to viewers of The Andy Griffith Show and Mayberry, RFD as Mt. Pilot. It lies south of Mount Airy, NC (Mayberry), on Route 52.

Here is a slightly closer view. I took these pics while I was on my way to Charleston, WV last August. I have probably seen this view at least 125 times in the last 38 years. It was relatively clear that day, but sometimes it is shrouded in mist, low clouds or fog.

The last one was taken a week later, when I was headed back south. I took this one through the windshield while cruising around 70 mph. Read about the mountain here.

I went here shortly after moving to NC, a friend took me because I pretty much called her a liar, I had NO idea that Mayberry/Mt. Pilot *really* existed. They even have Andy Griffiths house turned into a B & B.

That paragraph up there is just about all there is to say about the town though.

I like your pictures thought Kenju. NC is always green somewhere. I love that.

These pictures remind me of a guy I dated back in high school who lived near there. :-)

You know, the Andy Griffith Show was really good for kids to watch. I learned a lot of things about honesty and respecting other people watching that show. Along with some good laughs.

I've always loved the distinctive profile of that mountain.

Such a beautiful view. We pass by when visiting the Evil Twin's brother and his family in Lancaster, SC.

One of my best friends from college lived in Pinnacle, not too far from Mount Airy. I loved seeing Pilot Mountain whenever we went to her parents house on a weekend or for a short holiday like Thanksgiving. It is so pretty!

It's true, and the pictures prove it. North Carolina is a beautiful state.

Every time I go through I think of Aunt Bea,Gomer,Barney,Otis and the rest of the gang. They made the whole world know how special their place was.

Beautiful view. My mom lives in Lake Placid in the Adirondack Mts., and she always comments on the amazing views she sees driving to and from work every day.

That's interesting and must be frustrating that Big Pinnacle is close for rock climbers. I wonder if it is closed for conservation reasons or safety?

My ex-girlfriend, the one that lives near you, is originally from King NC which is right near Pilot Mountain. You can see the mountain from her parent's house.

I love having mountain views. We missed that in our 14 years in Florida. I'm surrounded by them now, and I definitely understand your appreciation. :)

I remember as a kid, we used to always say, "We're going up to Mt. Pilot" whenever we'd see that 'knob' coming back from Carolina Beach. Then SOMEbody (usually moi) would start whistling that darn theme song and try to keep it going all the way to Bluefield...

If you look at the clouds in the top picture you can see a puppy blowing smoke. Maybe that was Opie's dog. Also, I'm pretty sure I can see the ghost of Don Knotts in the trees!
