The Downside of Gel Fingernails

Thank Heaven mine don't look like these!! Please tell me how this woman takes a shower and actually washes anything? I'll bet she has to go to a hair salon for every shampoo, and how would she ever zip a zipper or button a button?

Mine are more like this photo, minus the diamonds, of course. I had them done about 3 weeks ago. My nails have never been strong, despite daily vitamins. Since my hands are in water frequently, my nails break easily. If I try to wear polish, my nails split horizontally. I have always wanted pretty nails and the only way I'll ever accomplish that is to have them applied at a salon. If I had known then what I know now, I might have been a little longer in making the decision to get them, because.....

Have you ever tried to type with long nails? I have previously told you about my bouts with adult-onset dyslexia, which causes words to be typed backwards or letters transposed. I spend all my time correcting typing errors and the dyslexic words anyway - and now I have added to the mix all the letters I type accidentally because my nails are so long. When I had them done, I told the woman not to make them much longer than the tips of my fingers, but they were a little longer than that and now that they have grown out for 3 weeks, they are too long for me to be able to type anything with no mistakes. It takes much longer to type a post now, so I might not be posting as often in the future.....LOL

i keep mine short. When they get long'ish, they really bug me. I saw that picture, and was weirded out. Why? Because I was at my dad's today looking at the 2007 world record book, and she was in there!! I called lil red in to look and he thought it was gross. Strange coincidence!

I'd love to have long and lovel nails, but cannot stand it when they grow even a little. I spend my time cutting them.

Ew! I think that lady has held the Guiness World Record for longest nails for almost a decade? How can she even lay down and sleep at night?

My nails are pretty long now and it bugs me when I type because of all the mystakes!! (pun intended) 'Tis why tomorrow I'm going down to get them filed to a more acceptable length. 3 weeks is a long time to go without a re-do!

I've always kept mine short, because I played the piano for years as a child, and they click on the keys if they aren't short. Now, I prefer them that way, it's much more practical. I think that woman looks haggard, probably because she spends all her time worrying whether she might break one.

she is too scary to have a man so we don't worry about reproductive matters, but HOW would you even sleep? I think she is a witch.

Thanks for coming by the site. My word verification has a mind of its own!

I knew a woman, when we lived in Utah who had nails half as long as those in the picture (in fact, at my wedding the kids were afraid of her!) Anyway, the first question people had for her was "how do you, um, ya know, wipe?"

She was never amused. Personally, I think long nails like that are just gross.

My nails, like yours, break and are not strong. Lately, they have decided to peel from about mid-nail bed, sideways. I've gone back to acrylics. I don't know why I ever left.

Judy my nails have always been a bit of a problem and anything faux just doesn't work with me (Boobs , nails . eyelashes) but since I started using hand and nail cream and massaging cuticle cream every night, over a few months, they are fine.
That lady appeared on British TV. I think it's horror TV!

I have no idea how to grow nails. I bite mine and when I don't -- which rarely happens --, it just feels strange to see them. I honestly think it comes from my early days of piano lessons: as Catherine noted, it was formally forbidden to have nails that would make clicking sounds on the keys!

That first picture is truly frightening. What would cause someone to grow their nails that long. Nasty!

I bit my nails from about age 5 to age 15. After that point, I switched to just cutting them really, really short. As in, if there's white showing, out come the clippers. (I know how weird this sounds.)

For my wedding 6 years ago, though, I didn't want to sport the nasty fingernails, so I had a french manicure done. The very next day, I spent an hour peeling and cutting off the tips.

Yours, however, sound lovely. :)

UUCKK...those nails look nasty. I had acrylics a very long time ago...while I was a nurse of all times....but they didn't last long because they were always in the way. My nails don't grow well, split and break...oh well. I saw the movie you watched...cute, funny flick.

That is just plain creepy! I have never had nice nails and probably never will. I should go for some acrylics or something, but I probably won't. Oh, well.

She must just sit around on the couch all day. What else COULD she do?

I have fairly long natural nails, and it gets tricky to type after awhile. But then it's hard to adjust after I cut them.

I take it the lady doesn't have a blog. How else would she type...with her toes? ;

I think she has her real hands inside fake hands! That couldn't be real. However, they say Howard Hughes had fingernails like that when he died. I am happily blessed with nails as strong as horse hoofs and try to keep them nice despite the chicken farming.

Ugh. That first picture makes me physically ill. The second one makes me envious (minus the diamonds, of course).

Ugh...that woman needs a little therapy, I think...

I keep mine very short, because of the typing thing. I'm already a horrible typist, and long fingernails just make it worse.

Cris said...

I keep mine long, not much, and manicure here is soo cheap (4 bucks) that you could do it every week if you wanted to. Oh, we should let that woman know that, because her nails are gross.

That's an interesting problem to have, Judy. Can't you clip them? I thought the artificial nails were cuttable.

As someone may have mentioned, that woman was on Ellen's show. I just can't understand it. It's beyond my grasp why she'd want it. But more power to her, going through life taking twice as long to do everything.

UNBELIEVABLE!
How does that woman do anything??? Like when she foes to the bathroom...Toilet paper? Hello? (LOL)...

I have rarely had long nails and alwaus founf they got in the way of almost everything I want to do and need to do...It is one less peoblem as far as I am concerned...especially since I make so very many mistakes typing as it is...!
I understand your dislexia problems...I too have a bit of that...!

In answer to your question about everyone in that picture---It was a candid shot, not a publicity shot and I think because the show takes place---well not really, sort of--people are speaking from the grave...I think the photographer thought this was more appropriate. It's the only one I have so if there were other more cheery ones, I've never even seen them...lol!
