The top photo was taken in my great-grandparent's yard before I was born, sometime in the 30's. This was in Wyoming County, WV near the town of Oceana. I recognize about 8-10 of them, but the rest are a mystery. Take heed: Label your photos! Fifty years from now, hardly anyone will remember who the people are!
The bottom pic was from the summer of 1942, when I was not yet 2 years old. The family had grown a good bit by this time (or maybe some of them didn't make it to the first one). This was taken in our front yard, in St. Albans, WV. Route 60 ran right in front of the house. We only lived there for about 2 1/2 years, so I remember very little about it. I have one or two other photos from this house; in one I am "swimming" in a zinc tub out in the yard, and in the others (which I posted recently on JAJ), I am sitting in an old yard lounge, trying to put on sunglasses.

Whenever I see old photos I always think the same thing. Why can't wearing hats come back in style?? Folks always looked so elegant and more dressed up, don't you think?
My mom has some reunion pictures and even though she was an elementary school child then, she still doesn't know who a lot of them are. Of course her father's family had something like 9 kids and her mother's had seven. That was quite a reunion.
It was funny that the sisters on my grandmother's side all only had one child each. Mom is one of only two left now.
The best part of family reunions is the 1/2 acre of home cooked food!
Judy please see my post tomorrow (Thursday)....you were one of the inspirations.
Oh yes... label the photos, very important. I have lots of photos of family members of the past and I would love to know who they are!
I love old photos!
My mom has labeled hundred of old photos she has and given them all to me to scan. I'm making a discs for both my sister and brother. Thank God mom has such a great memory!
I need to get some of my family's old pictures from my parents and have them duplicated. It's not a good idea to have only one copy of memories like that.
I LOVE pictures and memories like these, they remind me that the world is still inherently good.
When I get photos back from the printer, I always write out names and dates on the back...but with digital photos, I am much more sloppy.
Wow, you certainly come from a big family.
I am going to take your advice and label my pics and I must get my mum to do hers as I won't have a clue who theya re otherwise!
Judy,
That is right, label those photos! It will eliminate the guessing work of someone who might make mistakes. The date is important too.
I love these. Why don't we dress this way and wear hats now? I also love huge family reunions.
These are wondeful reunion photos. I agree about writing on photos. I think that is why I like memory books that have photos and journaling in them. I think it presents a better opportunity for names and information.
It's great that you can blow them up by clicking. They are fascinating. Thank you Judy!
My grandma labeled her pictures well, but we still don't know the people in them. They're all dead, and she's not here to explain them anyway.
I'm not even sure that labeling would help that much. All the people on the photos I own are gone and there's no one around who's known them. The last person in my parents' family died two weeks ago. No one to ask about the past any longer
As you know Judy, I love old pictures...And you are so right about the labeling of things....On the other hand, some people won't care about the old pictures at all...But, I would label them anyway.
These two are WONDERFUL!
In the pictures it looks like quite a crowd and gathering at the reunions.
I love the pictures! I wish there were more reunions like int the old days. It has been many years since I have even seen my own brothers and sisters. We live so far away from each other.
Have a wonderful day!

Seems people just don't have the family reunions like they did years ago. Wonder why that is.
And you are SO right...about labeling all photos. I hate it when I'm going through old ones from the family and don't have a clue who the people are, so MINE are all labeled for the future.
Can't even fathom a family get-together that large. Amazing.
