It is not what we do, but also what we do not do, for which we are accountable.
Moliere, actor and playwright (1622-1673)
We call them 'sins of omission.' Are you guilty of a sin of omission? Not telling the full truth...failing to say anything at all, when an explanation is necessary...
Some examples: If a person hits a parked car and fails to leave a note with contact information, it is a sin of omission. When a guy takes a girl home to meet his parents and doesn't tell them that she is of another religious faith (and he knows it is important to them) it is a sin of omission.
Okay kiddies....it's time for confession (truly good for the soul.) What sins have you omitted?

Let's see, where should I start?...
I never tell the Evil Twin how much things *really* cost. I always low-ball the total. Of course, if I get an amazing bargain on something, I tell the whole truth. :-)
I guess I am with Granny Annie...probably need to make a list.
I never tell half truths, well....!
Actually, hitting a car and not leaving a note is definitely not a sin of omission but rather a real crime of commission! And not mentioning a religion- that's a virtue of minding one's own business!
G in Berlin, it is definitely both a sin of commission and omission. I thought that was obvious.
Not telling your parents that your fiance is not the same religion as you is not 'minding your own business'; especially when you know it is of great importance to your parents. They deserve to know.
Wow.
And why is it one's parents' business, the religion of one's spouse/friend/acquaintance? Are they one's owner, with right of refusal for transfer of chattel rights? I don't think telling my business or not is ever a sin. Is it a sin if one does not discuss one's sexual orientation as well? Or do we have different ideas of what a sin actually is? Perhaps I am taking your post too seriously, and this was just a joke?
The list is endless:)
I think you and GinBerlin should have a debate. It would be interesting:)
I have committed a sin of omission, but none as blatant as the one somebody pulled on me last month.
I came out of the grocery store and found my side view mirror on the ground in pieces and a note on my windshield.
The note said" I hit your car and there are a lot of people watching me write this. They think I am leaving my name and address but I'm NOT..."
"Sin" isn't something that I, as an atheist, worry about since sin is a religious construct.
Right: Two years ago, I did the right thing after backing into a dark green car in the dark (it was parked along a curb under a "no parking" sign). For a small dent in the other car's fender, I am/will be paying an additional $5K on insurance (car/home/umbrella) spread over a 3-year period.
Wrong: I've forgotten all of my "wrongs". ; )

Oh Lordy...I am commiting these "omissions" all the time...Mostly, not to hurt people's feelings. I do believe there are times you must censor yourself, for the greater good....
And as far as banging into a car and not leaving a note--well, "sin" may be to harsh a word, but it is definitly a really Not-Okay thing to do....But "omission" I don't think so. As to the with-holding of the fiance's religion when you know it is important to the parents--is just plain wrong!
I'd be a lot better off if I committed more sins of omission. I am just the opposite; I tell way too much. ;-)
