Did You Know?

Seeing eye dogs are trained to stop at all intersections, regardless of traffic lights. The dog is unaware of the lights and is focused only on finding the curb or other obstacles that might be in his master's path. If the handler gives a "forward" command and the dog sees or hears a car coming at them, the dig disobeys the "forward" command. The dog focuses only on the cars, not on traffic lights.

During the time of peter the Great, any Russian who wore a beard was required to pay a special tax.

One of the most dangerous insects in the world is the common housefly. They carry and transmit more diseases than any other animal in the world.

'Goodbye" came from "God bye" which came from God be with you."

Baby whales grow at a rate of ten pounds per hour.

In the movie Babe, the piglet was played by over 30 different piglets because they outgrew the part so quickly during production.

A person who is lost in the woods and starving can obtain nourishment by hewing on his shoes. Apparently, leather has enough nutritional value to sustain  life for a short time.  (Bring good BBQ sauce if you plan on eating your shoes, and watch where you step.)

The shoes remind me of that WONDERFUL Scene in the Chaplin Film where he is so hungry he Boils his Shoes and attempts to eat them...BRILLIANTLY funny!!
"The Gold Rush", I think.

I hate flies! I truly do, and I know it is because the are such Germ Carriers....!

I knew about the Pigs, but I did not know about the Tax on Russian Beards...lol...They must have made a lot of money when that was the norm....!

I have a question for you on my latest post, my dear....!

I can believe that about flies!

That amazed me with the different pigs on Babe!

I'm glad I don't put on weight like a baby whale! I always like your random fact posts :) Here's another small one for you: Seeing eye dogs are called 'Guide dogs' here in the UK.

What cool facts and I knew none of them--well maybe the shoes.
Sometimes I think I have the metabolism of a baby whale.

Oh, oh, my hiking shoes are made of synthetic fabric, guess I'll keep stuffing my pockets with granola bars, with chocolate chips. Ick, flies!

That last one puts a whole new spin on "putting your foot/shoe in your mouth", something one congressman had to do yesterday. (Come on, who on earth in their right mind would want to see Oscar Meyer in his boxers.)

Things would need to be really bad before I would eat my shoes!

Everything I was going to say has been said by previous commentators! I'll add, yes that I knew about seeing eye dogs (and more), because we have a state school for the visually impaired here. I worked with one of the students, and I know many people that work at the school (they have 3 to 1 ratio of staff to students). It's all interesting tidbits, but hey I only wear leather shoes for special occasions. I've had steak before though that I thought could have been shoe leather! Hope I never have to eat the real thing.
