Another Old Book

The title of this one is "The Royal Road to Health" by Charles A. Tyrell, MD,  Copyright 1907. The subtitle is:  Or the Secret of Health Without Drugs" My book was printed in 1916. I haven't read this one either, but I suspect it would be fodder for the blog and humorous to boot.

This is an ad in the rear of the book; one of several. Of course, the products being sold are prepared by Dr. Tyrell himself. Note that he says:   "Delays are dangerous" I wonder how many sales he had in response to ads like this? Not many, or we might still have them on the market.

Old books are great fun!

I just watched a documentary wherein some people in England recreated a Victorian pharmacy, complete with some of the bizarre "cures" of the era. Check out the "Everlasting Pill":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antimony_pill

Interesting, scaring people into using your goods, still going on I think. Great old books.

We had an old book of natural cures at home when I was growing up. There was mention of bird droppings in one recipe and cow dung in another. That was enough for me! I have no idea what ever happened to the book.

That would be interesting to see if any of the "cures" make sense today.
Never knew anyone with"catarrh". Looked it up and it sounds yucky.

Judy, you know I asked if you had read Black Beauty and this morning I got to thinking about old books and one of my childhood favorites were Mrs. Piggle Wiggle; did you ever read any of those books?
thanks for taking me back...

Very interesting indeed.
We made it through the procedure today... I put my iPod on Mom with soothing music and she managed the four hour infusion without problem. One down four to go.

I love old books about housekeeping, child rearing, and above all, medical books. Makes me realise how far we have come. Some of the remedies prescribed are hair raising!!

As a child I absolutely believed in all those old remedies and amused my grandfather by telling him he MUST put Zambuc on his corns.

It'a pretty scary how some of these "remedies" were touted as being "THE CURE" ... but, then again, I can't see where it's improved much. There are always recalls, etc. and I think it is very hard to know what is good for you and what isn't !!

You've given me a great idea. I have an old book given to me prior to my marriage which was originally given to the generation before my time. Must be some gems of advice in that book.
