Surely you know someone like this....LOL....I can't be the only one.  I'm pretty sure this sums up how mr. kenju feels about his funeral. His birthday is next week and he's been saying for months that he doesn't want  a party or any "big to do". Now most people might take that at face value, but I happen to know him well enough that what he says in respect to this is the polar opposite of what he wants to happen. However, I am not a party giver. I'll make dinner for 2-6 people, but that's my upper limit for entertaining. I've told him over and over that he's getting what he asked for  -  NO party and NO "big to do" - and I don't think he believes me. The family will be here, and we are going out to a fancier dinner than we would ordinarily have - but no party. I'm serious - NO party!  Maybe now he'll believe me.

Fortunately I am not married to someone who expects a party...but he does know how to have fun at one. Whatever you do be sure to have fun and tell the old coot, Happy Birthday!

Naw, he is thinking this is a smoke screen for a huge surprise party you are planning. He is somewhere right now working on that surprise expression.
If you can live with him afterwards, stick to your guns.

Yeah, I kinda suck at the party thing myself. I do great as someone's helper, but definitely I'm not coordinator material.

My mom came right out and said she wanted a huge 50th anniversary party. She got one. In June they will have their 60th and I told her we can't have another huge party.. and I mean huge.. 225 showed up. But she said this time she wants their picture in the paper... so, looking for photographer.. or I might take the picture. Dad could care less.

...that made me laugh...I'd say the same thing and actually mean it, but perhaps he is protecting himself from the disappointment in case there IS NO big fuss~

Huge surprise parties are my idea of hell. Modest family do's are great.
I'm sure Mr Kenju will be grateful for any effort you make:)

The dinner sounds like a nice intimate 'to do' to me :)

I am exactly like mr kenju. I say one thing and mean another. I would definitely love to be fussed over, but I would never tell anyone that.

(I guess the cat is out of the bag now!)

Parties are for friends to throw. When I turned 40, a few friends found that my wife (who hates crowds and entertaining) wasn't planning anything so they threw one heck of a party! For 50, I'd moved here and there was only a small gathering. I hope the two of you have a great day.
