What Are You Waiting For?

A slice of life unfolded before my eyes today (one I'd rather not be privy to) as I was driving to and from my errands. On the way down, I saw a dead deer lying in the grass beside the road, and about ten feet away was a turkey buzzard or some sort of vulture. I wondered what he was waiting for, since the buffet was served and the food was getting cold.

On the way home, the deer was still there and five more buzzards had gathered; all of them standing at least six feet away from the deer.  The first one must have sounded a clarion call to his buddies. I decided that the birds were intimidated by the passing traffic, which was too close and too quick for them to feel safe. When will the banquet begin?

(I hope that the carcass will be gone by the next time I have to travel that route.)

The less appealing side of wildlife and nature. We have loads of bunny rabbits on our land, and quite often I see a fox run by with one of them in his mouth. Nice. Not!

What an awful sight. In the spring there are always young furry casualties on the road and it vexes me.

I hope the deer was not hit by a car. I think in all of nature there is a pecking order in who eats first.

Interesting that they were all waiting around rather than just tucking straight in!!!

It is certainly a sad sight and a growing sight as we are in the middle of the deer's mating season. The chase causes them to throw caution to the wind and it becomes a perilous time for humans and deer.

Perhaps they were waiting for someone to say Grace?
That is the part of nature that I'd as soon not see. Hunting season here flushes the deer out on to the roads but on the whole, there is much less road kill here than there was in Florida.

The deer here are rampant at dusk, I try to get home off the highway before then, they just leap out of the fields on you sometimes en masse. Sad. Sad for the driver too.

A part of nature that is there but one you really don't want to witness. I hope it isn't there either the next time you go that way :)

Yes, it is that time of year. I found a pile of feathers in the back yard this morning... the hawk is hunting again.

Are you sure there were not entrails over near the birds? I've seen that and it appeared as if the deer were all in one but was not. Sad.

Could they have been holding a memorial service?

Perhaps they were waiting for the venison to age?
