A Very Good Day

Mr. kenju left on Saturday morning with three friends for a pipe and tobacco show in Richmond. I spent the remainder of the morning packing the van with another load of stuff to donate (I think 3 more loads to donate and 2 going to the local landfill will just about clean out my garage.....YAY!!)

My daughters and two of my granddaughters showed up shortly after lunch and spent the rest of the day with me. They helped clean out a bit more from the garage; my older daughter took some stuff and her girls found a number of things they wanted, which made me happy. I still can't find any takers for the five bridesmaid's dresses. Wouldn't you think someone would want them for Halloween?

We ended our day together by going out to dinner. It was fun to be with most of my girls today. Too bad my daughter-in-law and her two girls couldn't have come too. I really enjoy being with all of them, and the girls are growing up so quickly that every time I see them, they appear to be 3 inches taller than  they were on the last visit.

In my quest to get the garage cleaned out by winter so that I can park in it for the first time in 27 years, I was just about ready to hire someone to haul off an old refrigerator I don't use any longer. Lo and behold, yesterday we got a letter from the power company saying they will pay $50 for old refrigerators and they will come and haul it away!! Now, I ask you, how great is that?  Here I was about to pay someone to take it.....LOL.  Another silver lining....

Edit:  In response to some of the questions raised in the comments:  There are many thousands of men (and women) who smoke pipes and have great interest in trading, buying, selling, talking about and smoking pipes and various types of tobaccos. There are expos and conventions of them all over the US.

An empty garage party? sounds like a good idea (after I paint the walls and clean the floors...)

The power company will take old refrigerators and recycle many of the parts from them and dispose in a safe way the parts that cannot be recycled. That is why they are offering to pay to take them away - so that many of the toxic parts will not end up in the landfill.

Oh, that does sound like a good day...and 50 dollars to boot.

I've been cleaning out, too. I love giving stuff away and letting new folks store it for awhile.

Well, that sounds a bargain = but why would the power company want old refrigerators??

And great you can see the back of the garage now!

Are you going to hold an Empty Garage party once you're done?!

I think the situation is crying out for one.

Bridesmaid dresses: try giving them to a local theater group for their
costume collection.

Anonymous: I thought about doing that. Thanks for the prod.

Judy - Sometimes schools with a theatrical dept like to get dresses or costumes.

I know somebody in Ireland who would give his eye teeth to get to that pipe convention!

I am inviting myself to the garage party!

Looks like an end is in sight and you'll have a huge empty space... now can you keep it like that? That's always my problem, not getting it back to where it was !!

The bridesmaid dresses could be altered a bit for younger girls and put in a dress-up play box. I made one for Nyssa when she was four and for six years she and her friends had a great time dressing up and more than that, they made up original stories and put them on as plays in the den. A few dresses, gloves, old jewelry, hats and small items such as boas and butterfly wings; a great spark to imaginative play... something our kids today are sorely lacking in with all the canned video games.

Now that's my kind of day Judy. Spending time with your daughters and granddaughters...plus getting things done in your garage AND dinner out with the gang. That's a great day! I haven't parked in my garage for at least as long as you; and I'm hoping it will happen soon too. Happy Sunday sweetie... ~Joy

When you mentioned all the bridesmaids dresses, I finally realize just how much stuff you have held on to.
Such a deal with the power company. Love those silver linings.

Good for you. I'll bet you are feeling really great about nearing the finish line. I need to do that with my entire house. I have way too much stuff.

Great news about the refrigerator! I assume they'd rather dispose of it safely than have people just chucking them away?

I'm clearing out stuff too. I just sell mine on Ebay!

Our power company (WA)is only offering $30 but I think the old fridges are power piggies besides. Lovely to have your girls with you.

Cleaning out the garage is exactly what I need to do. I need to clean out the house, too.

I have an old Hotpoint refrig. well over 40 yrs of age that's been moved all over the country and going strong. Meanwhile, have had to replace newer models in the house several times. Our elec. company used to pay $100 for old working refrigs., but reduced it to $50 a few years ago -- working is the key word if you want them to buy it and to haul it away. Wonder if mine is a collector's item? Guess I should take advantage of the price before they reduce it more. When the newer ones inside my kitchen breakdown, I've always been able to save everything by taking items to garage unit. Nothing nearly as dependable any more.
