Monday, September 13

We had early company this morning. Mr. kenju's brother stopped by on his way home  after playing golf in Pinehurst over the last four days. We got up very early (6am, which may not be early for some of you - but is for us!) Our younger daughter came over with a coffee cake she had made, and we all enjoyed cake, coffee and conversation for two hours. Then he had to get on the road for his eight hour trip - and we went back to bed for a nap. It was too short a visit, but we're planning for a better one next year.

It's a beautiful, breezy day in the neighborhood; sunny and warm, but with a hint of fall in the air and leaves dropping into the pool at an alarming rate. Sometimes we leave the pool open until October, but this year I don't want to chase leaves and clean the pool out daily, so we have the closing scheduled for the 22nd. I hate looking at the pool cover all winter - but it beats skimming the pool four times a day.

I took two frogs out of the skimmer this morning, and they seemed paralyzed by the coolness of the water. Both of them sat for along time in the place I set them down before hopping away. The cooler nights have lowered the water temperature to the mid 70's. I only know one person who wants to swim in water that cool - my granddaughter "G" - who never seems to mind the cold as long as there is water to swim in.

Hi, Judy. Summer never really came to my part of So Cal this year, so it's nice to hear you have some sunshine.

70 is officially too cold for swimming. NOT too cold for friends and family!! :)

What a nice idea to entertain family at that time in the morning. And what bliss to be able to go back to bed.
At present I wake at 6am and worries and fears get me out of bed. It gets better as the day wear on.

We had a swimming pool at our old house and we really could only enjoy it in July and August because the nights kept the water too cold the other months. No pool here and I cannot say that I miss it...except for a few weeks in August.

I had a in-ground pool back at my home in Michigan. Would have it open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Used a solar cover to keep it warm and actually had to leave it off in July and August or it would get too warm. Then came the winter with maybe 2' of snow on top of the winter cover. Hated seeing that, the snow that is. So, here I am, in NC with a community pool I don't have to maintain. Much better.

I can't image the chlorine in a pool can be that good for frogs either!

6.00am isn't so bad. :D

I'll bet that nap felt good!

The headline in our local paper the day after Labor Day was "Summer's Over." We had an above ground pool for a while when the kids were young and used it, but once they were a bit older they wanted to go to the town pool to be with friends and out of parental sight. Having a pol in VT is not worth the time and expense that goes into it.

We are still having 90+ temperatures here in OK. My daughter and her family are still swimming in their pool. Fall still seems like a long way away....

I noticed some trees with leaves turning yellow and red. Up north this doesn't happen until the first frost, but here we might never have leaves turn unless they turn as soon as the nights get into the low 50's or upper 40's. It has been a stressful summer for the grass and the trees.

Doesn't it seem as if Fall got here very fast this yrar? Amd you all had such an extremely HOT Summer....The weather here has been quite strange and erratic, as I guess it is everywhere now....
Poor litle froggies...I hope they 'unfroze'. The closing of the pool definitely signals that Fall is here!

Glad you had such a nice visit, Judy....and 6am is very early to me...lol!

It is always a good sign when a visit is too short. We had a windy day with heavy rain and the sky was that low I thought it would touch the ground! The only pools around here are those left after the rain. :(

I'm so glad we don't really get winter here in the tropics... I can swim at the beach all year round! Mind you, once you've acclimatised the cooler season is still cool...
