Referring to Yesterday's Post

I think I can say with complete certainty that there is one thing I'll never do again - and that is prepare for a garage sale. Our multifamily  neighborhood sale is set for next Saturday, and today I worked in the garage for five hours, trying to get everything ready and also hide the stuff I don't want to sell.

The garage looks like  a hoarder lives here now -  and would you believe that I still have to go throughout the house this week, pulling out other things I'd like to sell? I doubt I'll get to sort through everything, especially the books before next Sat. Mr. kenju just asked me how I thought I could put anything else out there, since there is hardly any room to walk (and it is a two car garage.)

I have promised myself that I will take everything that doesn't sell to Goodwill on the Monday following the sale - before I have time to convince myself that any of those things ought to be kept. Most of it is left-over inventory from my flower business, and even though I have already sold a good bit of it - there is a mountain of it left.

Wish me luck!

I recalled today that at the time I started my first blog - Just Ask Judy - I was planning a garage sale. It was over five years ago and at the time I said I'd never do it again. How little we learn - how soon we forget.....LOL

We're getting ready for a yard sale, too. I've never had one, and already I never want to have another one!

I don't like having garage sales. Around here, if you advertise that you are opening for business at 7:00 a.m., people might start gathering outside as early as 5:00, before it gets light. That always makes me uncomfortable.

Though I go to a lot of garage sales, I haven't done one myself for at least six years. It's just too darned much work. I donate and take the write-off, or use Freecycle--sometimes Craig's List.

But, I'm sure glad a lot of people do have garage sales.

Reminds me of our spare room .......

Watch any other doors you have that might be open - dishonest and plain criminal people can creep into your house!

Watch your back!!

And good luck!

Good luck with the garage sale. I can only say--better you than me. My sisters love to have them, me, I'd prefer a root canal.
The only one I had, my prices were so low that no one even dickered.

Good luck!
I'd love to have a garage sale but MTL pales at the thought of strangers milling round.

Good luck and lots of stamina to you. Can't bring myself to do another garage sale although I do shop them. Had 3 when I moved from the big house to the little one. And the one my sisters and I had for Dad when he moved from house to retirement home almost did all us in except him, he loved getting rid of stuff. And people were lined up by 5am for an 8am opener. Beseiged. Now I send it to Goodwill or a consignment shop.

If people come a day ahead, I always thought you should make them come back at the right time. But an article in our paper last week on how to have a successful garage sale said to let them go ahead and buy. Makes room for more of your stuff.

I always found the key to be in organization and labeling. I have seen people just put a big table out and pile the stuff on. Being the obsessive and compulsive perfectionist I am at times, I always had hanging racks for clothes and those that needed to be on the table were sorted by size and individually tagged with the price. I tried to organize the garage so you could walk around from one side to the other and see all things. In several garage sales in Mississippi and two here for my folks we made between $500 and $1200. Most have a lot left over and I take them to charities such as Children of the Kings Daughter's thrift shops, Salvation Army and Goodwill. I personally like the organization of the first two best. I also took the books to the library... most now have Friends of the Library book sale shops.

Good luck. I noticed that here most start at 8AM. In Mississippi, they started at 6AM and people started lining up at 5:30AM.

I had a garage sale about five years ago--got rid of tons and tons of stuff, yet our house still looks cluttered with stuff. Good luck with your sale and don't weaken about the Goodwill donation.

I don't do garage sales, or car boot sales but I do sell stuff on Ebay all the time. I have a mountain of old shoes, t-shirts, cds etc in the corner of my room and although I sell a great deal, it's always replaced with more stuff.

Love your cartoon. Actually bought a bird, in a cage with his name on it, at a garage sale. Bird became hubby's best friend and when the bird died hubby's grief was palatable.

No garage sales for me,too much work. We have sold better stuff on eBay. My hubby took a car load of clothes to the DVA thrift store a couple of weeks ago.

Like the cartoon, I have it saved somewhere on my computer. My computer files are as crowded and disorganized as our garage.
