Thank Heaven for (apparently) honest working men. Several days ago we bought a new garage door opener, after learning that the one we have now is kaput. The appointment to install the new one was set for Tuesday afternoon, and three men arrived at 4:30pm.

As soon as they saw the unit we had purchased, one said..."That 1/2 horsepower opener isn't going to be strong enough for your door." I answered that it was the same type we'd had for the past 21 years, and he said that the units manufactured 20+ years ago were much stronger than the ones made currently. He explained that our 30+ year-old double garage door is solid wood and weighs a lot more than newer garage doors, which are usually metal with a foam core and weigh much less.

If we had him install this 1/2 horsepower unit and we were unhappy with it, we would have to pay to have it uninstalled and pay more to have a stronger one put in. We were so pleased with his honesty that it softened the sting of not getting the new one immediately.

So now, we have to return this unit, buy a larger one, and reschedule the installation. If it weren't for this man's honesty, we would have a much worse problem than a delay.

You got a good man there! Doesn't always happen, though the man who fitted the works to make our garage door remotely controlled was a good fellow too.

Its nice to know they do exist.

Or maybe its something about garage doors.......

I have found that 99% of workers are honest when they want you to change something or some product. It is rare that they are trying to make more money.

Always a good thing to be reminded that there really are good, honest, hardworking people out there.

Judy,

I think most working men take great pride in what they do and want you to be satisfied with their work.

This is just another example of good old American honesty.

Everything he told you is so logical and yet I don't think any of us would have known about the heavier doors, etc.

Lucky us that workers like this fellow are still around to help us..

I have been fortunate over time to have met a lot of honest people. I'm glad you found one too. It will save you a lot of trouble and he will definitely get a good referral from you. It always pays to be honest!

It's hard to find good professionals that are going to give you good advice upfront. I usually just post pictures of Mike Holmes in the area the workers are going to be at and that usually prompts them to "Do the right thing." Good thing the hubby isn't a big do it yourselfer like me.

There are honest people still out there. It is such a shame that we have to feel that this is a heartwarming exception... when we were kids this was the rule rather than the exception. Society and government in trying to be so politically correct and trying to legislate self-esteem have produced a majority who feel that they are entitled to pay and praise without having to earn it. Honesty is part of character, character counts and CAN be taught. I hope more people will start to realize this before it is too late.

I'm glad that the guy saved you the hassle and money of having to replace an inappropriate opener. I think workmen are usually up front and honest.

Now, handy men are a different story. I could tell you about 25 years of the good and bad ones. (Mostly bad)

Well, good for the rare honest person! But don't get me started on garage doors! That's the subject for my next (maybe) blog post. Ugh!
