CRY WOLF!

This wolf was shot recently in Drayton Valley, Alberta...which is near Edmonton about 3 hours North of Calgary. The wolf weighs over 230 lbs, smashing the previous record of 175 lbs. Wouldn't want to run into this guy in the woods. Apparently a bear hunter witnessed this wolf chase off a big black bear at his baiting station.

This came to me in an email today. It's turning out to be animal week here at Imagine, since work is keeping me too busy to have any ideas to write about.

Whoa! Lived in both Calgary and Edmonton and have never heard of a wolf that big - although they will take down moose while they are calving.

What a monster - I think I'd rather meet a bear.

Sorry, but this photo makes me very sad to see such a magnificent animal shot, and not for food.

Glad you are busy! ;-)

I'm always in two minds about hunting as a sport. I knowe its been done for years and years and all that. But it does seem a pity to shoot such beautiful animals just for fun. For food, protection, culling, etc. - OK

Some authorities or other (can't think who but associated with the countryside) are trying to introduce wolves in Scotland. They have somehow fenced off a vast area and are introducing European wolves into it. Needless to say there are those who object and those who think its a wonderful idea.

Beavers are being introduced on suitable rivers and are apparently doing a great job of building dams, and creating wetland, which will help with floods etc.

(I seem to have summarised a lot of animal and environmental science in a couple of sentences!!)

That is one BIG wolf! I never realized they could be that large. Am not wanting to meet up with the likes of him, anywhere.

For some reason this photograph touches my heart. Yes a dangerous creature but what a magnificent animal he must have been. Still I would not want to run into him in the woods.

Guess I am in the Tabor and Granny Annie camp. I could only do that if he were attacking me or I was REALLY hungry.

Yikes...he's huge. He's as big as a bear....and kinda looks like one.

Pretty strong hunter to lift 230 pounds of fresh meat like that.

I had no idea a wolf could be that large! Amazing. Sad he was shot, though...

I agree with Tabor, this is a very sad photo. There's no reason to shoot this amazingly beautiful animal, none.

That is one big bad ass wolf!

That's one monster. I agree with Tabor; animals should never be killed for trophies. It makes me sad to see a beautiful animal head on some shooter's wall.

I'm with the people who are saddened by the photo. It's a pity we can't learn to live with the wolves.

OK! So everyone who thinks this wolf was shot for fun is crazy! If we don't manage the population of these dominate predators they will become unmanageable and overtake livestock herds. when they relocate to find food. Since I don't see anyone of you who think it is a shame to kill wolves sacrificing your well being and your children and where you live to them it is completely necessary to manage the populations of these animals
