In Virginia Beach ~ October 2009

(Click to enlarge - I hope!)
Here I am with Fern and Joe in front of the statue of King Neptune on the strand in Virginia Beach. Neptune wasn't there back when we lived in that area; he's a more recent addition to the boardwalk. Fern and Joe were our Best Man and Matron of Honor (in 1964). Prior to this trip, we had not seen them both since the early 90's, when we both visited mutual friends in WV. Joe visited about 8 years ago, on his way back from Florida with his grandson. It is really too bad they don't live closer to us; if they lived next door, it wouldn't be too close for me.

A side-shot of Neptune, looking down the strand. It was a misty, gray and cloudy day.

The first night, we went to Steinhilber's Restaurant (see the cards below). Fern chose it, on recommendation from the desk staff at the Marriott Courtyard where we stayed. I remembered the name, and knew that the restaurant had been there when we lived in Norfolk, but we had never eaten there. It always had the reputation of being excellent - and pricey - too rich for our purses back then. (And probably still is...LOL!) But talk about good seafood??!! This place has it, along with excellent service, nice views, white linen and did I mention GOOD food? If you are ever in Virginia Beach, I heartily recommend this place! And do click on the link and read the history of the place that was opened the year before I was born.

I did not pull out the camera and photograph the food, although I wanted to. It would have drawn too much attention to our table in those low light surroundings. I ordered half a lobster tail, with shrimp, served in a small casserole of crab meat. It was to die for and the serving was larger than I could eat, so I shared it with Joe. It was accompanied by a twice-baked potato and served with home made cornbread and lots of real butter. The salad which preceded it was fresh and crunchy. We had no room for dessert, although the menu made us salivate!

I bet you felt like you had been away for ten days after that wonderful weekend. The menu looks terrific and has me drooling even at 6am!

I can't stand fish which always limits my choice of restaurants, but it sounds great.

We stayed in apartments in Sandbridge, and I don't recognise your photos!

Neptune sure is a scary looking dude.
You can't talk them into moving next door??? You hate to let those kinds of friends get too far away.

Judy are you quite tall? Lucky you. I'm shrinking. What a lovely get-together. I do think the norm is larger portions over there which is a two edged sword if it leaves no room for dessert that's good calorie wise but I'm always salivating for my pud.

Glad you had a great vacation at the beach. Hope the weather was better than here in Raleigh. Pricey place but the menu looks awesome. I will have it on my list for my next visit to VB. I hit the VB area at least 4 or 5 times a year from April to October.

OH, YES!! This is the BEST place in the area. Mom and Dad love to go there together on their anniversary. The service is so wonderful... you never want for anything and they try to please even if you want something special not on the menu. Their shrimp are always voted the best in the area and the lobster bisque is to die for!

What a wonderful opportunity for this trip. The seafood sounds wonderful. I surely miss it - living in my area there is not much available.

Neptune must not have been there when we were in Virginia Beach in 1979.

I just remember the rain and mud where we parked our travel trailer. Our son was in special services in the Navy and was at the School of Music at Quantico. We were visiting him at the time.
