The hawk is not new to the neighborhood; he's been around for 7-8 years, and keeps us relatively free of snakes, squirrels and small rodents. He was sitting on the fence in the corner where the foxes used to bring their babies to play, so perhaps he's waiting for lunch to be delivered. He'll wait a long time for those fox kits! He used to sit on the ball atop our deck umbrella, and this is the first time I've seen him so low to the ground, except when flying and swooping down. I couldn't get any closer than this and it is really too bad he didn't spread his wings for us, because he is a magnificent specimen! I was about 40' away when I shot this.
A new follower popped up today, but I can't tell who it is. Would you identify yourself please, so I can thank you?

Nice visitor. I wonder if it's a Cooper's Hawk.
Since he's been a visitor for over 7 years, he's more like a member of the family at this point!
Judy, you have a wonderful collection of visitors to your garden.
How great to have such a dear Visitor, so close by. I wish the Hawks I see would come closer....But they are very far away.....!Hope you get some more pictures of him, Judy.
I'd love it if ours would come back and take care of these mice.. well, bigger than a tiny mouse, smaller than a rat kind of field mouse that is out in the preserve. We have a flying squirrel.. a sugar glider.. did I tell you? No shots yet.
As for the construction... I guess I should do a little post on that shouldn't I.
He looks like a well fed Hawk so I guess he is keeping the mice and squirrel population under control.
You do indeed have a wonderful group of visitors to your garden! How fun to be able to see them up close!
70 follower Judy! Wow1
Love Mr Hawk.
Another friendly visitor...how nice Judy. Hello Mr. Hawk. You have many interesting visitors in your garden....cool.
How wonderful to have so much nature right outside your back door.
How exciting! I think it's almost miraculous when we have such wonderful creatures come so close to us. I just heard today that there is apparently a family of foxes that are prowling around our neighborhood. Which is really incredible considering we're right next to the downtown area with autoroutes all around. I hope I'll be lucky enough to see them. If I get picks I'll be sure to post.
Beautiful! what sort of hawk is he? He looks quite big, sitting there.
You live in paradise. I could use that hawk here to keep the rabbit population down.
I love these kind of visitors, Its good luck - I'm sure of it ;)
Love and blessings,
M
How deep in the woods do you live to have such a variety of wild life? Envious one speaking here.
Hope he doesn't get your birds and sticks to mice.
How wonderful! I love birds of prey :)
