Wedding ~ May 24, 2009

Mel had three weddings today, but I only got to see one of them set up. This one was purple and white; twenty tables and four different types of centerpieces. The top one was three heads of hydrangea. The table linen was purple too, and had the lighting guy not pin spotted the centerpieces, they would have been completely lost against the table tops.

French tulips in Pilsner vases.

Cool water roses again.

And tulips, again.

Today was a hurry-up-and-wait situation for me. Mel, the other designer and I left the shop in two vans and went to the Washington Duke Inn in Durham to drop off flowers for one wedding and reception. We couldn't set up then, since the room wasn't ready. So we placed everything in one corner and left for The Hilton RTP. That ballroom wasn't ready either, so Mel and Rhonda left me there at 12:45 and they went back to The Washington Duke to set up and then on to Duke Chapel with the wedding flowers. Mel said that the catering staff and the wedding planner were arriving at the Hilton at 1pm, and that I should place all the centerpieces as soon as the tables were clothed. The people for whom I was waiting didn't show up until 2:00 and 2:10, respectively. I had nothing to read, so I sat and waited. Once they got there and the linen was located, I placed the linen on the tables. It wasn't my job, but I really hate to sit around and do nothing and I wanted to speed up the process if possible. About 2:40, Mel came back to get me, but I had not been able to finish by then. So, he left again, giving me the keys to one van and told me to meet them back at the shop. I was able to leave at 3:20, and I drove very carefully, since my purse and my driver's license were back at the shop. I am always scared if I have to drive without them!

By the time I made it back to the shop, Mel and Rhonda had gone out to deliver the 3rd wedding. I had to park and wait for them, since my shop keys were also in my purse. I guess I should start carrying my purse on all deliveries, don't you?

No restful week-end for you then. One should be able to practice meditation during enforced idleness periods but the danger is one loses the plot and forgets what one is waiting for:)

Hurry up and wait. Not a fun day at all. But then weddings are not supposed to go smoothly, are they?
How about a waist pack. I live by mine- out of the way and always there.
I liked the tulips also.

Judy,

What a busy day you had...The flowers in the Pilsner glass was so unusual. I loved that.

Rest up if you can during the week because I'm sure the weekends in June will be your busiest time.

Nancy, May is our busiest month here for weddings, followed (usually) by October. I will only work 2 weekends in June.

Judy,

We still get a lot of "leftover" April Showers in May so most of our brides try to get married in June...

I remember when I lived in Virginia we had beautiful Spring flowers in early May and then I would visit my Mom in Pennsylvania and we would have more Spring Flowers in June. It was nice to have two Springs, and I guess that is still the case.

So, rest up after all of your May arranging and enjoy yourself. Take those flowers out of the pilsner glass and fill it up with your favorite suds and relax. You deserve it....

I am a sucker for beautiful roses, but it's too bad that the table linens were purple, too. The other centerpieces worked better - all were lovely.

Everything was lovely as usual, but the hurrying and waiting was ridiculous.

Maybe you need a fanny pack (can you still buy those?) or just deep pockets for your driver's license and keys, so you don't have a purse to worry about. You need ID on yourself, anyhow, in case of some disaster. (Headline: Unidentified Florist Hit on Head by Crazed Caterer)

Gorgeous flowers!!!! And yeah, I hate having nothing to do, too! And yeah, take your keys. Not having mine with me puts me crazy.

What a frustrating day. I wear cargo pants most of the time and have plenty of pockets for keys, phone, tissues etc. I never carry a bag/purse.

Your pictures are wonderful as always, beautiful floral arrangements!

I have a couple of those fanny packs to wear not only when I am traveling! they are great for the essentials: money, cell phone, keys.

These are lovely... I still am amazed and awed at all the unusual flowers you use. Love the hydrangeas!

I listened to that O Solo Mio... My brother sings a song called Down From His Glory.. same tune but words of a hymn. They are talented but need some more time and training. A true opera singer would be able to sing on that stage with NO MIKING and everyone would be able to hear. Perhaps one day we will see them in Europe's opera houses.

You had quite a day, my dear...How does Mel do it? THREE WEDDINGS in one day...I'm exhausted just thinking about it and hearing about it..lol!

Such gorgeous arrangements, one and all. Out of curiosity, with the economy striking so many businesses, would it be accurate to say that the high end weddings are still bringing in a lot of business? How about day to day business?
