Ephemera: Old Magazine Ads

What a load of crap these ads are!

What I've noticed is that those who "stick with Johnnie Walker" may not even be able to stride in the morning, let alone do it briskly!

Click to enlarge. "Toasting removes harsh irritants"??? Tell that to all the people who got mouth or throat cancer.

Camels promote "a peaceful feeling" and digestion? Who knew?

No one; because that is a load of crap for certain!

These came from the issue of Life Magazine dated November 23, 1936. It sold for 10 cents.

LOL Back in the day, Johnnie and I got along just fine. Today, however, he would kill me.

I do love old ads! Especially the medical ones where a simple ointment cures 101 ills!! if only!

And we still read and believe adverts!

Certainly in the fifties truth was a very scarce commodity in advertising and - hands up - I was part of it.

Old Advertisements are so telling of how far we've come....but they are replaced by others that we continue to believe.

I hope you're feeling better and that headache has gone away....

Hope the pills are working. Headache begone.
Wow. Are we a bunch of sheep being led down the slaughter shute? Yes we are. I remember when smoking was portrayed as cool and the worst that could happen is that it would "stunt your growth."
Anyone notice lately in the new movies that everyone is smoking? When I think how long it took for me to quit, I get more than a little teed off.

Actually the ads are frightening, but charming. Or frightening because they are charming.

The power of advertising I guess.

I love old ads and you found some dillies. Yep, cigarette ads were the worse for spreading death glamorously.

Judy, thanks for your encouraging words on my blog about Ron. He has recovered well from the accident.

Nice to know what sort of cr*p they were peddling when I was 6 months old Judy.

I'm wondering which of the current ads, fashions and trends they'll be laughing at in 50 years. Will it be that women were rushing in for botox and face peels to preserve their youth, and they all got old anyway?

Old cigarette ads never cease to amaze me.

Now they just use sex to sell it all!

Advertising is all about money; truth be damned. It always was and always will be.

My eldest brother died from emphysema. Smoked those Camels for years.

Luckily I never learned to inhale.

Greta, thanks for the visit and for following me. I am unable to comment on your site, but I have bookmarked it.

These are interesting Kenju.
I have two old Fortune magazines that I picked up a long time ago at a yard sale. They are in good condition and the ads are priceless. Many for cigarettes and alchol as yours mentioned. Also several for autos which are no longer made. One magazine is from late 1930's and the other from 1940. The oldest one has an article and pictures of Colonial Williamsburg as it was just opened. The other has painting reproductions of Paris in the winter at war.

It is horrific, when you think about it, how we were led down the garden path, especially on Cigarettes...to unfortuneately, certain terrible lung diseases....and in more cases than not, death.
The selling of all these things through Print Ads and Radio and of course later...TV.....Thank You Madison Avenue!
And all the Ads for Liquor....AMAZING!

I recently bought an old magazine ad book at the library sale and it is amazing what we were convinced to buy.
