Vestiges of Summer Camp ~ The Sharpshooter

Here are some things I found when I cleaned out a closet - the badges I won for Riflery. I won the Sharpshooter badge when I was ten; shooting prone at a 45 degree angle. I can still conjure up the smell of the spent bullets (22 gauge) and the loudness of the rounds. Hmmm....maybe that's something that contributed to my deafness. We never wore ear plugs back then.

Go here to read all about it and see the target.

I went back and re-read that post and there was a comment from me, too! Time does have a way of going by....To think you won that at Age 10! Amazing!
And it wouldn't be surprising if that DID effect your hearing...!

Instead of Kenju, we should be calling you Annie Oakley Jr! Neat memories (I must have missed the first post).

I had a comment on that post too, but I had forgooten the story. You are full of surprises Kenju.(aka Pistol Packin' Mama) Can you still hit the target?

You have kept these badges since you were 10 years old!
I am amazed!
I am going to show this post to my husband who thinks that *I* am a packrat.

Star: I haven't tried to shoot a gun since I was about 15. I inherited my dad's guns, but I sold them.

I always wanted to shoot and hunt to please my father, but I was never any good at it and the one time that I shot a duck and it landed dead at my feet (even our retriever was disappointed) all I could do was cry because I had killed this beautiful living creature.

Maria: luckily I only shot at targets; never at animals.

My mama was a college sharp shooter. I wish we had her badges. Just added another skill to your coolness:-)

What an interesting side to your personality. I just went through a box of files and found some old stuff I had saved for no particular reason, but this time I threw it out. I guess I am a door closer.

yes I recall ONE boy scout camp including rifle range a LONG time ago. THEN the lawyers got involved (bastards)
i think they are most of the problem with so many aspects of our daily drama....

LOL Judy -- finally, something we don't share. I can't hit the broad side of a barn!!! Bambi is safe from me.

Very cool! I always wanted to try my hand at archery, but just never got around to it. Maybe one of my kids will take an interest...

That is so cool.

And you can bet that it's a rare camp that will hand over a loaded gun to kids nowadays.

OK, Buckshot, firecracker kenju! All I had was California type Girl Scout badges.....as in ice skating (yea, that build courage).

I'm so glad to have found another blog from North Carolina! Isn't it fun rummaging through memories like this?

Just found your blog...and I thought "where did she get my badges?" Like you, I can still associate time and smells relating to getting my wonderful merits. I have the "metal" medals somewhere too - just not sure where.

So glad you posted these. I too won these at summer camp, and they weren't kept. I have all the same memories of the sights/sounds/smells also. Wonderful to read your post! Thanks for sharing this!
