Typewriter Art....Believe it or Not! (Plus TV)

Here's another of the amazing emails going around. Would you believe that these art works were made on a typewriter? Scroll down for the text of the email.

Paul Smith, the man with extraordinary talent was born in Philadelphia on September 21, 1921 with severe cerebral palsy. Not only had Paul beaten the odds of a life with spastic cerebral palsy, a disability that impeded his speech & mobility but also taught himself to become a master artist as well as a terrific chess player even after being devoid of a formal education as a child.

'When typing, Paul used his left hand to steady his right one. Since he couldn't press two keys at the same time, he almost always locked the shift key down and made his pictures using the symbols at the top of the number keys. In other words, his pictures were based on these characters.... @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _

Across seven decades, Paul created hundreds of pictures. He often gave the originals away. Sometimes, but not always, he kept or received a copy for his own records. As his mastery of the typewriter grew, he developed techniques to create shadings, colors, and textures that made his work resemble pencil or charcoal drawings.'

This great man passed away on June 25, 2007, but left behind a collection of his amazing artwork that will be an inspiration for many.

Boston Legal has been one of my top favorite shows for five years and I anxiously awaited the first show of this season, purported to be the last. Okay.......I watched part of it tonight and I am here to report that Boston Legal has officially 'jumped the shark.' Stupid fantasy sequences, interspersed with idiocy about Denny Crane's dangling "parts" served to put me in a daze - and not in a good way. They will have to forget the nonsense and get back to basics before I will spend another minute watching that drivel.

TNT has the best new show of the season, so far.......Raising the Bar.......and they saw fit to place it on the schedule opposite Boston Legal (Monday 10:00 pm) At first, I was upset about that. Now I see that I needn't have worried. It's "Raising the Bar" for me!

Dancing with the Stars started off with a bang. I think Lance Bass shows great promise, as does Cody Linley (I think I got the name right) a boy with more poise than most teenagers have. Cloris Leachman was on a comedy roll, but made the show run long. They'll have to keep her under control if she gets voted back. I wanted to see Susan Lucci (mr. kenju's fantasy girlfriend), but I inconveniently fell asleep. I think it is odd that she is the only dancer I didn't see. What did I miss? Was she good?

I had actually never watched Boston Legal, but wanted to see Shatner in something and when I was setting the DVR for last night (we are 6 hours ahead) I saw it and taped it. I was actually realy bored by the way Shatner's part ran, but the other guy's indictment of the Tobacco industry actually brought tears to my eyes. I so agreed with it, but it was said so eloquently that I wish I could print it out, memorize it and then use it.

I also wish someone would do the same with the statistics for national health care, encompassing extra expenses for lack of preventative care, injury and death, as well as the costs and profits of uninsured billing and the recent bankruptcy law changes.

I will watch it again and hope they turn down some of what I, as a female, consider silliness. Maybe the guys empathize, though.

You know I watched DWTS! I agree with your reviewa. I did see Susan Lucci. She wasn't bad/ wasn't great. This may sound like sour apples, but despite her lovely figure for a woman her age, I don't think the skimpy outfit served her well. I felt the same last year about Jane Seymour. Do you think CLoris will get voted off, or get the sympathy vote?

Paul Smith's work is absolutely amazing. Thank you for showing us these pictures. Imagine, even thinking of the possibility that a typewriter could be an instrument with which to create art.

Those pictures are amazing. It reminds me of the people who can create works of art on an Etch-a-Sketch. It just doesn't seem possible, but there it is. I need to share those with the Evil Twin. He truly appreciates beautiful art done in unusual mediums.

I can't watch DWTS here in Germany (sigh), but I have to say I have always thought it unfair when pop stars are put on with others because often they have already had so much dance training. No wonder Lance was so good!

I'm with you on a show "jumping the shark."

I was a die-hard ER fan when it first came on, and for its first 8-10 years. I even got the ex-Mrs. Farrago into it. Then one season I noticed that the ER was experiencing explosions, riots, terrorist attacks, hostage situations...more dangerous incidents than a small, third-world country!

My show had become too stupid to watch.

So I stopped watching and I haven't looked back. Now I notice in headlines that they're trying to bring back some of the original actors, such as George Clooney and Anthony Edwards. HAH! Good luck!

Typewriter art - who'da thunk? Amazing stuff, nonetheless. That they're done by someone with a significant diability is even more amazing, isn't it?

I watched all of Dancing with the Stars and think Cloris Leachman did an admirable job for a lady over the age of 80.
I really wasn't very impressed with Susan Lucci's dancing.
The couple that I voted for though was Warren Sapp and Kym Johnson.
For a big guy, he danced wonderfully.

Those pictures ar amazing.

I haven't seen Boston Legal. I turned over to the she you mentioned on TNT, but I didn't finish watching it. It looked pretty good though. Once baseball season is over, I'll probably watch more.

That typewriter art is so inspiring...wow.
We're big "Dancing" fans here too, it looks like it will be a great season. I was looking forward to seeing Susan just like you, she reminded me of Jane Seymour last year...very controlled - too much of a lady - Bruno said she needed to cut loose!

I've never watched BL and always regretted that since everyone swears it is the best

I love Raising the Bar!! How great is Jane K as the judge!! She kills me. All the cast is wonderful and some of the cases/stories are very intense.

I have DWTS on TiVO - I can't watch it live because I can't stand the backstage chatter so I TiVO and then just watch the dancing and Bruno!! I love Bruno :)

the typewriter art is astounding.

I've seen this kind of thing before, but never with this degree of detail. Those are amazing!

Oh, and yes, they were peppers I found out.

Love the typewriter art -- what gift he had!!!!!!!

I've never been into Boston Legal fan (Law and Order is my addiction). I really do like Raising the Bar -- Stephen Bochco does it again. And yeah, I loved Hill Street Blues.

"Boston Legal" was definitely off it's game last night. It felt strained and false in almost every way, to me....I thought that maybe it was just me being very crochety...But I really did not think it was one of their better shows..."FORCED" was the word I was looking for, actually....! All the stuff with the Phone ringing..? Stupid and again, Forced. Savud E. Kelley is better than that!

Personally, I don't particularly care for "Raising The Bar"...It seems terribly old fashioned to me and ther guy with the long hair is a big bore, to me...(lol). I didn't watch it last night..But TNT repeats some of their things so I might still catch it if there is nothing else I want to watch at that time....
"Dancinh With The Stars" is not my cup of tea. I don't hate it, but....I really have no deep interest in it so I don't watch it....I think Cloris L. is so fantastic to do this show though....GOOD FOR HER!

Those Drawings are quite anazing. I would love to know what techniques he duscovered for himself....Because these things do not look like they were made with a typewriter. I certainly believe they were, but These techniques he taught discovered would be fascinating to know....!

Thanks for yoyr comment Judy....Between Blogger being IMPOSSIBLE..and then my comnputer going Wonky...Well, I am worn out! But visiting as much as I can under the circumstances. Talk about an Addiction...lol...The Computer and Blogging....!
I know I could use an intervention..But, this is ridiculous! HA HA HA!

I'm feeling catty today...Susan was awful....she was stiff, no passion at all and looks anorexic. She will need some serious work to stay in the mix. hisssss Cloris needs to calm down....everyone else was OK. I watched CSI Miami....blahh.

Those typed pics are certainly amazing. Isn't it amazing how the mind can compensate for a other limitations?

I was watching Boston Legal and reading blogs, and I thought it was a rerun. It seems they did tobacco industry last year????
I watched Dancing and Susan Lucci was stiff to me. The girl judge told her she needed to gain weight. Funny...
