Out of the Mouths of Babes

I was casting about for something to post tonight, so I opened a file cabinet and looked under "Kids", where I have some school papers from long, long ago. There are several essays written by one of my daughters; they made me chuckle and also made me thoughtful. I don't remember reading this before. She was ten when she wrote this.....

A Gift I'd Like to Give

"I'd like to give my parnets (sic) a special gift. I want to give my parnets a big poster of all the exciting things we do together, because they give me everything. I hardly give them anything. When I do, it's not as nice as what they give me. I sometimes forget to say thank you when I had a fun time on fun trips. That's about all I have to say. "

She illustrated it with a drawing of a wrapped present with a big bow on top.

This made me smile and be wistful for her childhood. This is an almost perfect child, both now and in the past. She has brought us nothing but joy her whole life. She is a gift. Thank you, my child, for being you! It's all the gift we need.

Here's another one; also from age ten....

My New Year's Resolution

"My New Year's Resolution is to be able to grow eight inches because I want to get to my mom's height. I also want to be able to be taller than... [my sister] . My School Resolution is to have straight "A's" and to be a better understanding student because I usually get all over people when they do something wrong. I also want to prove to myself I can get A's."

So, what's a little jealousy or power trip from an otherwise almost perfect person??!!

These are really wonderful Judy...How GREAT that you kept them and could get to them so you could share them with all of us. I found that first one about the Gift to you and Mr. Kenju, really touching!

Excellent choice on "keepers". I always worry I'll throw out something great of Buddy's, so I just have stacks and stacks of papers. LOL.

Lovely memories preserved on paper. I have a few that my special daughter wrote also and I share your pride in the almost perfect daughter.

Nostalgia is wonderful. I can airbrush any misbehavior from my memory and only remember the wonderful things my little girl did.

What treasures these are, Judy. I've got one file folder where I throw in ideas for the blog, but it hasn't occurred to me to use things of the kids when they were young. Great idea.

And what a nice cross compliment in your daughter's writings at 10 and your take on her then and now.

Something to treasure. Boys are somewhat short on words.

I love reading things the kids wrote way back when. They wonder why we save them, but aren't they priceless years later?

Nice. Very nice.

I keep my daughter's first shop project she made with her ole man in the basement. Hung up on one of the joists, it gathers dust. But everytime I look at the thing (I don't know what to call it) I smile. She wanted to do what daddy did. So I set her up with hammer, nails, and some scraps of wood. It was her idea to use crayons to finish it off with. I will never throw it out.

She ended up be very handy with her hands. She is an experienced pro bike mechanic, repairing bikes, building them and building wheels. She can read a tape and use a skilsaw. But most of all she ended up being smart, with several degrees, and is still as special as the day I first laid eyes on her.

Thank you for breaking my political season funk. I needed this.
