From the 1939 World's Fair....

What a treasure this is! Click to embiggen, and view a "conn-clave of champions" as it says, of boxers, taken at the 1939 World's Fair in New York. Mr. kenju's father was a security guard at that fair. This copy of the original, sent to us by a relative, was among a group of family photos dating back to the early years of the last century. I will be posting them from time to time.

There are more well known names from boxing in that photo than probably have ever been taken together before Judy.

Judy,

When I was 11 years old in 1939 my Dad took the whole family to the New York World's Fair in New York.

You could see the symbols of the fair (The Trylon and Perisphere) from very far away and we were so excited to be there.

I remember riding in the "Car of Tomorrow" at General Motors and seeing Billy Rose's "Aquacade" a beautiful swimming show starring Johnny Weismuller(who later played Tarzan)and Eleanor Holm.

Inside the Perisphere was something I had never seen before. A Moving Walkway. It carried you into the perisphere and you then looked down on the Model City of Tomorrow.

Twenty Six years later Roy and I took our four children to the New York World's fair of 1965.

Now you've gotten me started, Judy. I will probably expand on this and write a proper story about those fairs. Thanks for the idea! You have a terrific blog......

It could be used for Project Black, too!

I went to Harrods last month and photographed the food too! Maybe it's because I felt less conspicuous with my camera there.

Several of the photos your daughter took were of Westminster Abbey

Judy
When I was a child in Athens,Ga.
I had a best friend down the street from me. Her parents went "all the way" to New York for the 1939 world's Fair and they brought back souvenirs and trinkets.
I thought this was the most glamourous and exciting thing for anyone to do as I had never been beyond the city limits of Athens.

:) Neat photo

I just found your post of this photo (from a google search). I purchased a (nearly) identical photo taken at the same time. I had some questions about your photo: What size is it?...Mine is sepia toned--am I correct in that your photo is color tinted?...Have you ever had it appraised? Thanks for sharing the photo.

Thanks for sharing your photo which I was able to locate in a google search. I recently purchased a (nearly) identical photo. I have never seen another like it. Can you please tell me the size of the photo? Is it color tinted? Mine is sepia toned. Have you ever had the photo appraised for value?

With much appreciation,
Steve
