Judy,

Your quote by Lillian Hellman reminded me of those terrible days of McCarthy and the infamous Un-American Activities Committee.

She was blacklisted by those people and neither she nor her companion, Dashiell Hammett, could find work as playwrights for many years. On being questioned by the committee, Hellman said:

" To hurt innocent people whom I knew many years ago,in order to save myself is, to me, inhuman and indecent and dishonorable."

She was blacklisted and Hammett went to jail....

On a lighter note, your roses are gorgeous......

Ah - "Little Foxes." What a great play.

Thanks for the insightful quotes - lots to think about there.

Lillian Hellman had a terrific head on her shoulders. Unfortunately, too often we humans treat those we "like" (or with whom we agree) much more openly than we do those whom we "dislike" (or with whom we disagree). This is so evident, not only in our personal dealings, but in our treatment of those in the public eye.

I love the one about forgetfulness. That's funny!

A rose WOULD smell just as sweet even IF we called it a turd, wouldn't it?
Yes, it would.
Such wisdom in that quote, but let's keep on calling it a rose.
