LICHEN

It measures 1 1/4" across. I found it today when I went out to get the mail.
A short, but serendipitous walk!

Check it out here.

I have a friend who makes earrings out of them.

I'm sure there are neat things on my walks too....trouble is, they're buried underneath like 8 feet of snow.

I'm not sure I would recognize "lichen" if I saw it...In fact, I may see them all the time and just do not know that THAT is what this is!

I have to admit that I didn't know what it was so had to look it up. I don't think I have ever seen it before. Now I am trying to imagine what Colleen's friends earrings look like....

I've never heard of them. I read part of the wikipedia link you provided, and I have you to thank for putting another groove in my brain. It's great to learn about new things.

I think you were bold to even touch it. It looks like it might have asked you to "Take me to your leader."

If you keep your eyes down on the ground when you walk you often find amazing things. I learned this as a kid.

Your lichen looks good enough to
eat.

I love lichen. Half way up Porlock Hill in Somerset, if you go up the Toll road which is also the scenic route there is a stretch of rocks covered with a wonderful orange coloured lichen. Time I went to have another look.
