This old ad came from a book, which I'll show you soon, of pipe and tobacco ads from years gone by. The artworks here fascinate me almost as much as the Rockwell paintings, and I cannot imagine that many of the artists represented herein weren't famous in their time.
This one appeared in 1933, and the copy says that cheerful advertising was doubly welcome in the dreary, lean days of the 30's. You'll notice that Santa has Player's Cigarettes in his gift bag. The sailor seems very glad to see him! Of course, ads like this cannot exist now (and for good reason!) Unfortunately, the artist is not named in this painting.

This is a fitting postscript to the marriage license office shown yesterday, don't you think?

That's a lovely poster, if we overlook what it is advertising :)
Michele and I hope you have a stress-free Christmas and a wonderful year in 2008
These are great!!!!
May you and yours have a joyous and blessed Christmas and a wonderful 2008!
That had me laughing out loud!
Very artistic; it does show old attitudes towards cigarettes.
Michele sent me. Have a wonderful Christmas!
You are the best...love the things you bring:)
Advertising art of yesteryear was pretty wonderful!
I don't miss the tobacco ads, but when I see one it is a bit nostalgic.
And look at those slippers! They have rabbit ears! Is that Santa pushing nicotine. I love the old ads, like the coca cola ones even though I don't like the products they brought down upon us.
Nowadays that top add would read "Playas, please"
ps - not saying Merry Christmas quite yet...I'll be lurking the internets some on Christmas Day, I am sure
I never particularly cared for champaigne, but after reading that last one, I will never drink out of a lady's slipper!
i love vintage art....whether it's advertisement, old cards, etc.
merry christmas to you and yours!
The art is so nice, but yeah, talk about not Acceptable these days lol, and like u said, with good reason.
Judy, I send you my best wishes for you and yours to have a very Merry Christmas and New Year. Hugs from Canada!
This is kind of Amazingh, Judy....My motherr smoked Players cigarette's for about five minutes....And that was the extent of her Smoking Career....But I remember thinking the box was quite pretty....! The cigarettes, If I recall, were oval shaped....!
Beautiful Art Work!
Love that second one...LOL! We all need a few laughs these days....!
Dear Judy and Mr. Kenju,
Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy 2008.....
