A Wedding Ring Legend

Why should the wedding ring be worn on the fourth finger?

There is a convincing explanation given by the Chinese...

Thumb represents your Parents.

Second (Index) finger represents your Siblings.

Middle finger represents you.

Fourth (Ring) finger represents your Life Partner.

Last (Little) finger represents your children.

First, open your palms (face to face), bend the middle fingers down and hold them together - back to back. (as in the photo above)

Second, open and hold the remaining three fingers and the thumb - tip to tip.

Now, try to separate your thumbs (representing the parents)..., they will open, because your parents are not destined to live with you lifelong, and have to leave you sooner or later.

Please join your thumbs as before and separate your Index fingers (representing siblings)...., they will also open, because your brothers and sisters will have their own families and will have to lead their own separate lives.

Now join the Index fingers and separate your Little fingers (representing your children).., they will open too, because the children also will get married and settle down on their own some day.

Finally, join your Little fingers, and try to separate your Ring fingers (representing your spouse). You will be surprised to see that you just CANNOT....., because Husband & Wife have to remain together all their lives - through thick and thin!!

(I don't know what this means for those who get divorced, especially if there was a compelling reason for it. But it makes a nice legend.)

Michele sent me over, Judy. Hi!!

I think I was wearing my wedding ring in my nose, or maybe around my neck. LOL It's probably just my memory lying to me though. I suppose I wore it on my finger just like everyone else.

Nice legend tho. Maybe the Chinese have better marriages...

What a lovely legend. I sat here and followed directions and was quite surprised that I could not seperate my ring fingers.

Although, there must have been a time when I had incredible finger strength, because I did separate them to take a wedding ring off. It has never been replaced by another ring chosen by another man - and it won't be until I am very certain that my fingers are indeed as weak as my knees, and that our love is as strong as the symbolism of a ring should be. Perhaps even more so.

Most interesting Judy...I have never heard this before....
AND, thanks for the info on the Orchid! I will have t try that..Is is just on the cut flowers that you pinch that off or do you do that while they are still on the vine, too?
Very Interesting! And I LOVE your comment about wondering if that works on people, too....LOL!

As I continue to fly solo while my beloved wife tends to her ailing mother, I found myself quite coincidentally staring at my wedding ring today and thinking about its amazing symbolism.

Fate ensured that I read this entry today, for it reinforces why something as simple as a little gold ring can mean so much to those of us lucky enough to have found The One.

Thanks for another moment of enlightenment, Judy!

Your footnote is the pertinent part of all this for me Judy.

I tried it and it worked - that is I couldn't pull the ones apart. I can't demonstrate but if you clasp your fingers together with little fingers up and thumbs; there's the church and there's the steeple - look inside and there's the people.
Now you can spend the rest of the day experimenting:)

And I grew up thinking the middle finger meant something else!

If you can actually move your ring fingers apart, is that a bad omen...?
