Odds and Ends

Edit below!
Click to enlarge. These are the kinds of things I think about when I am driving and then forget (since I don't write them down). This was in our paper this morning.

*****************************************

So, assuming I can let well enough alone with my photo program, things will get back to normal here fairly soon. Of course, normal here at the House of Kenju is seldom what you might refer to as normal.....LOL.

Some of you recommended things I can do to get the computer back to its former speed. I clean the cache every 2 days, and I delete certain cookies nearly every day. I do have spyware, which I run about once every two weeks, as well as an adware detector. Updates for the computer and peripherals are installed nightly. I re-boot every couple of days. My daughter says that I have too many photos stored on the computer and too much stuff downloaded from email and web-sites. I try to remember to back it all up regularly and then delete some, but you know about the "best of intentions", don't you?
I did disk clean-up this morning, but the computer says I don't need to defrag. I check that about once every 3-4 months.

Ok... I love what the editor said about hiding phone numbers on websites. That couldn't be truer. They DO hide them! Sometimes it takes me a good 3 minutes of sifting to find them!! And it always irks me!

Michele sent me this time!

If you've got enough memory, then photo storage shouldn't be an issue.

I would suggest getting a thumb drive (about 60 bucks) to store your seldom-used stuff - they're tiny and almost indestructible. You can get them up to 1MB (perhaps more) at WalMart or other stores, and then your "puter will be running great.

Also, a defrag might be in order.

sounds like you've been having some computer-I hope it gets better fast.

Michele sent me, but I did take a moment to look around. Sounds like your computer is as fast as mine.

Unless you're a "techie" it's almost impossible to stay on top of everything Judy. Don't beat yourself up.... I say that, but I shutter to think what I would do if something 'bad' happens to my computer. I think I've taken all the right steps to prevent that, but honestly...you never know.

My computers are also slowing down, and I get exponentially increasing amounts of spam. Like being forced to lie with certain politicians, I can only grin and bear it.

I very much like the "wondering while driving" piece; it's very true!

I meant "live with certain politicians", but I guess "lie" works too...

Do you Defrag, too, Judy? I find that helpful for cleaning up and clearing out as well as the Disk Cleanup...!

Also, maybe you need to get more memory! More really is better! (lol)

I Love those things from the paper...there are a few I think about, too! And one made me laugh, but I don't remember what it was now...LOL!

Hi Judy! I just had to stop by and say hi! I LOVE that article - so true!!!! Hilarious!

My son has a laptop that we got him for high school graduation and he claims it's still really fast because he stores virtually everything on an external hard drive. Probably a very smart idea, especially if you're storing lots of photos. They're not very expensive.

Michele sort of sent me, but I'm pleased to say hello and wish you a great weekend!

I was gong to suggest the defrag too. My daughter's first laptop was a Dell and a couple of times she had the same problem due I think to so much music and so many photographs. We did the external hard drive thing which helped and a defrag which really helped but took a long time. Be patient with that process.

Hi there,
You beat me all of a couple of minutes, so your PC is faster than mine at the moment...
You should set it all up to do it automaticaly in Task Schedular...
That way, you can just work and be happy...
Here from Michele's today..

Hi Judy, don't believe it when Windows tells you there is no need to defrag your hard drive... in fact when it has completed DO IT AGAIN, it will help.
If you have enough memory(at least 512 MB) and a hard drive that still has at least a few GB of spare space thats all you need for a reasonably fast computer as a rule.

Get a Mac. LOL!

But seriously, everyone's advice seems to be sound. External hard drive is the way I'd go, and back up all of your important stuff onto CDs or DVDs, too. A power spike or electromagnetic surege from a nuclear detonation can wipe a hard drive (the information there is stored magnetically). CD and DVD info is recorded and retrieved optically, so magnetic interference or electical power spike won't scramble data.

I'm very disappointed with you, kenju! LOL!

I recommend throwing the computer in the pool and starting over again.
At least, that's what I almost did once before...

Here's a good article you might want to check out. There might be something new here that you haven't tried yet. Worth a shot, anyway. Good luck!

I can email it to you if you're still interested! LOL.

Those were interesting thoughts, and illuminating too. Often such thoughts cross my mind too.

Haha, I love the one about the dishwasher, I always put them down, but I think they will harm the basket...
