Sometimes the stupidity is appalling!

Edited below!!

I like to think I am a fairly intelligent person, but sometimes I do such stupid things that it amazes me. Earlier this evening, in a quest to make my computer run a little faster than molasses (even though I have broadband cable access, it is slowing down at an alarming rate). My daughter suggested I get rid of any material I didn't need, so I started with photos. I discovered that Picasa had made a folder in my web albums for my old blog and the current one. I figured since those photos were already in the blog, I could easily delete them from that album. Well, it was easy, but it was also stupid, because I didn't notice an important message until I had deleted about half of the photos: when you delete photos from that folder, you are also deleting them from the blog posts.

Now I know it was my fault for not reading the message window all the way through, but I wish that Picasa had printed that message in RED letters!!

So, for those of you who came to the last post before I deleted those pics - you got to see Mr. kenju's portrait. Those who came after I deleted them get the dreaded red X. How dumb was that??!! I could restore some of them, I guess, but it would take weeks to locate and scan them again.....soooooooo.....I've learned my lesson. I will no longer delete anything before first making certain it doesn't wipe out everything!

Edit: I got it back!! I had to restore all the photos in my recycle bin and then upload it to the blog again. I don't know if I'll do all of them, but at least I got this one back where it belongs!

You are not stupid...I almost did the same thing...I actually put a link on my blog to the album and then took it off and almost deleted the album because it seemed redundant...then I noticed that there were pics there that were in drafts not actual blogs and finally read the disclaimer. You get a lot of computer savvy readers and maybe someone can help restore the pics.

been there, done that. i once deleted my wife's entire blog by mistake (deleted wrong database without a backup) Luckily it was still new and I salvaged it using bloglines and google's cached pages.

What about a system restore to a time before you deleted the files Judy?

If you're stupid, then I'm stupid too. I just do stuff like this all the time and am sooo bad at saving things!

I think we've all done something similar at some point! I am glad you got them back though, phew!

Have you tried clearing the cache memory from your computer to speed it up a bit?

I've been guilty of doing equally stupid things! Thanks for restoring the photo, it was a great drawing!

Oh Judy what a salutatory lesson. I get great pleasure from deleting spam and old, old messages and there are lots of other people's photos I could delete. I use Picasa also and one big problem I have is when I copy photo from anywhere I always have great difficulty trying to find it again. Wonder if you have a solution.

I've almost done that before. You probably have a lot of spyware and adware on your computer. I have a friend who regularly cleans mine out for me, and it makes such a difference. There are a couple of free programs that you can get to clean up your computer.

Judy I recommend SpyCleaner. You can download it for free from www.downloads.com

I actually ended up buying the paid version of it. They send updates automatically.

I think everyone has done that at one time or another. I still get to hear about the time I deleted my daughter's paper for English class that she had spent weeks working on.

hmm I know what you mean about wanting to be an intelligent person. I do that kind of stupid stuff all the time.

Computers just are far too literal, Judy. People can "interpret" commands but those annoying computers just follow instructions exactly. Damn them!

Welcome to the club. I can't tell you how many times I have deleted things unknowingly only to find later that it was abundantly knowable.

I ran into a similar situation when trying to decipher my college catalog on my own. Big mistake - it cost me a semester. Oh well, live and learn.

OY! Well, tyat would have truly done me in, my dear...! I must say, I do not use Picassa in the same way you do...I onoy upload pictures from MY Pictures, and use Picassa to "work" in for lightning, etc. Then save...'save as' in my own pictures so it's through Picassa, at all....
For some strange reason, after you first told me about Picassa almost a year ago....I wasn't comfortable uploading to my blog this way or even saving without using 'save as'.....I'm glad I don't do it that way....You must hjave been stricken, Judy!
Glad you found a way to retrieve them, though...! Congratulations on that! See? You are not stupid at all!

I plead guilty to comparable stupidity although I prefer to call myself technologically challenged -- it has a much nicer ring to it. Right now I'm trying to straighten out a mess of my own as you well know but somehow the people at Google & I have a failre to communicate.

Ouch. We've all done things like this (unknowingly). You're in good company. When in doubt, I copy the folder to the desktop, then look for any evidence that it caused trouble.

Phew!!! Close call! I'm with you, i've done several stupidish things with my computer here lately....maybe i'm getting senile.

Judy, I amended one of my wishes to be much more specific. Thanks for the heads up. I certainly wasn't thinking of (example) the Dalai Lama when I wrote that. :)

What? I've deleted photos from my Picasa and not lost them from my blog? Of course, we live in the country and cannot get any service but dialup for our computer, so maybe we're better off in the slow lane of computer world from all these horror stories. Also we're not getting hardly any spam since we moved here.
